Because I think people have had it drilled into them that this is the proper, but also the higher class, way to say that. It isn't, but I think that's why people will fight you on it.

I generally don't bring it up unless people ask me, but I'd say this and "what's the salutation on a letter to an Honourable" are the questions I get the most.
