Port Charles - Friday Update - June 27th 1997
(posted and e-mailed)

Mike is pouring beer at "The Recovery Room" surrounded by
Scanlons and off duty Interns. He happily announces that the
place is under new management. He gives the first beer of the
new reign to Mary Brennan Scanlon. (Ah, Mary has a maiden
name, this will eventually lead to relatives on the distaff side.)
Matt asks why Mary is so favored, and Mike explains that he
used her phone number to place his bets at the track. Frank and
Joe tease their mother. Julie pulls Joe aside and says her mother
would have fainted at the risque by-play, (Real thought: "Aren't
poor people amusing.") but she seems to be enjoying this "normal"
family stuff anyway. Frank proposes a toast. "To the interns of
97 for their remarkable and frightening, to some of us,
accomplisment of earning their first paycheck as Doctors." (Real
thought: "I would have been a better Doctor than any of these
goof balls.") Eve makes a comment about the first week being
a cakewalk compared to being held at gunpoint.

In the ER Chris continues to try and revive his patient. Ellen tells
him to give up and goes to call in the time of death. Ellen tries to
make Chris stop again. Chris is about to use the paddles one more
time. Ellen won't let him. Chris orders five milligrams of something.

Scotty asks Karen, who has just finshed examining Serena, to stay
for pizza. She refuses and says she has to report for the next shift.
She tells him some of her duties, and he says she must be a Doctor
because he doesn't understand a word she said. (He must think
a lot of people are Doctors.) Lucy comes in declaring that Serena
wants Dirty Kitty to meet Sigmund. (The duck will be thrilled.)
Karen leaves. Scott worries about having Serena out of his sight.
(Real thought: "I'm not sure she's safe with your Psycho boyfriend.")
Lucy assures him that Doc is handling everything fine. (Real
thought: "She's safer than she is with my idiot ex-boyfriend.")
Kevin gallops in giving Serena a piggy back ride. Kevin reminds
her that pizza is on the way. Scott suggests ice cream too, but
Serena doesn't want any. Lucy suggests getting anchovies on the
pizza. (Real thought: "I'm pregnant. I have cravings.") Serena
asks if her Daddy is mad at her, because she liked the nice lady
who took her.

That nice lady, Danielle, meets Rex (*here boy!*) in the park.
He asks her if she has good news for him. (Real thought: Are
you going along with my plan, or am I gonna have to leave
your body under a park bench.) She tells him she can't help
anymore. (Real thought: Danielle? Don't make us laugh.)

Rex (*fetch!*) tells her not to rush into anything. She tells
him it's not a matter of time. She's grateful to him, but...
He asks if he didn't do everything she wanted. She says
he did, but that Jake is her priority, and he wouldn't like
what they did. He treats her right and "Let's me belong to
him." (That made our skin crawl.) She suggests that Rex
(*roll over*) take her share of the loot and pay her what he
thinks she earned. (He is kind enough not to comment.) He
gives her a hundred bucks (for dinner) and tells her to go be
with Jake, while he has the diamonds fenced. (Real thought:
"Now that I know what's important to her, I can use it to
control her.")

Jake returns to his apartment with an armful of flowers.
He looks for Danielle but she isn't there. (Real thought:
"Woman, Where is woman?")

Scott tells Serena that he isn't mad at the lady for being
nice to Serena. Serena says, "But you still don't like her."
Kevin explains that they don't know the nice lady, so why
doesn't Serena tell them about her. Serena says that the
nice lady read books to her, gave her stuffed animals, and
watched "Thin Man" movies with her. Lucy comments that
she loves Thin Man movies. (Real thought: Kevin you never
take me out anymore.) The nice lady made sure that Serena
wasn't scared, so Serena doesn't want her to go to jail..
Scott says that the lady had no right to take Serena away.
No one has that right. "Even my husband?" Serena asks.
Everyone laughs. "Your husband? That's a loaded question."
Lucy says. Serena thinks Lucy is funny and asks her Dad if
it's okay to like her. (Real thought: "How far does your
paranoia extend , Dad?") He gives her permission. Lucy says
she likes Serena too, and that she would like to share a secret
with her.

Karen slips back into the hospital. Nurse Grace tells her that
Dr. Burgess didn't notice she slipped out and that Joe took
care of her "scut" work. (Real thought: "He's hot for you,
girl.") Grace gives Karen a paycheck and tells her that the
rest of the interns are at the Recovery Room, except Chris.
Karen graciously suggests that Grace ask Chris to join them
when he's free. (Real thought: I've just been paid. I like
everybody.")

Chris is still trying to revive the dead patient. Ellen tries to
stop him again, but then gives up, "Have yourself a party."
And backs off. One of the orderlies tries to pull the body
away. Chris tells him, "Get away from me, I'm working here."
Ellen comments that if he just wanted to work, she'll get
him a live patient. Nurse Grace finally gets through to him
when she tells him he's hurting, not helping. She recommends
that he go home and get some sleep or go out and get drunk.
A stunned Chris leaves the ER.

A despondent Chris arrives back at his darkened apartment. He
looks at the blood spattered on his scrubs. He tosses his keys in
the little dish Eve admired the other day. Then he strips off
his shirt, (*hunk alert*) and heads for the shower.

Back at the Hospital Ellen tells the patient's family that he died.
The wife insists that he couldn't be dead because he was young
and healthy. Ellen says these things happen. The woman asks
what kind of monster she is and Ellen replies that she is a Doctor.
Ellen turns away to ask Grace for a consent form. She takes
a deep breath and turns back towards the family.

At the bar, Matt, Joe and Eve are at a table chatting. Joe says
something about Chris not being there, and Matt thinks a
fight between them would liven the place up. Eve says she'd
be willing to go a couple rounds with Burgess. Joe says they
should worship at Dr. Ellen's feet and Eve says she doesn't
think she can keep it up for a whole year. Without segue, Eve
looks over at Julie and comments that Julie seems to fit in
anywhere. (Real thought: "Yeah, like Queen Elizabeth at a
swap meet.") Joe asks if she's jealous and Eve sneers at the
idea, and says that she'll "just have to settle for being vicious
and cute at the same time." Matt says that Eve works so hard
at both. Eve tries to bum a drink. Karen enters the room and
Joe leaps out of his seat to go and greet her. (Real thought:
"Let Matt buy Eve that beer.") Karen thanks Joe for doing her
"scut" work. He asks her how Serena is.

Julie, Mike, Frank and Mary discuss baseball. Julie comes up
with a trivial fact, and wins a bet with Mike. Mike tells Frank
to dance with Julie. (Real thought: "So I can make a little time
with your Mom.") Frank and Julie slow dance. Eve and Matt
chat some more. She says she doesn't care if everyone likes
her and he suggests intensive therapy. She, apparently familiar
with the GH psychiatric staff, says she doesn't want therapy
from someone more messed up than she is. Jake comes in and
walks up to the table. He asks if they've seen Danielle? (Yeah,
look for her at the bar, though Danielle's never been there in her
life.) Eve makes an offhand remark, that could be interpreted as
criticizing Danielle's "acting" ability. Jake snaps at her to "Shut
up", he won't have anybody talking about Danielle that way.
Eve says okay. (Real thought: "I'm not the only one who needs
intensive therapy.")

Serena tells the adults that she knew there was a secret from the
looks Scott and Lucy exchanged, and because Scott said Lucy
was his very good friend, but that he had never mentioned her
before. (A big *slap* for Snott. He told Serena NOTHING
about the woman who bore her.) Scott stumbles over an explanation.
Lucy ignores his inarticulate attempts to shut her up. She asks if
Serena knows that babies grow in their Mommy's tummies. She
says that she doesn't. (Real thought: "Daddy can't explain how a
slinky works leave alone the reproductive system.")

The interns have just come back from looking at the new room
at the back of the bar that Matt is renting from Mike. They're
all kidding Matt about how much work it needs. Matt offers
to buy the next round and Eve asks him if he shouldn't save his
money for things like walls and floors. Joe suggests that he
and Frank could do the work, and Eve points out that they
couldn't even get the knobs in the shower on the right way.
Joe asks Karen if she'd like to dance, but she says she wants
to go home and wait for a call from Jagger. (Real thought:
"If I don't I would probably be sleeping with you tonight, Joe.")
Julie and Frank stand by the Jukebox, trying to decide what
song to choose. Their tastes differ, and she picks something loud.
Just as they begin to dance, Chris walks in. (Real thought: "This
day sucks.")

Lucy tells Serena that she is pregnant. Scott is visibly relieved,
since he thought that Lucy was going to tell his daughter about
her unusual birth and conception. Serena thinks it's cool and
tries to talk to the baby in Lucy's tummy. The door bell rings.
Lucy lets in Lee and Gail. The two of them greet their granddaughter
and she asks them to stay for pizza.

Danielle goes into Jake's apartment with a bag of groceries. She's
chattering on when he informs her that something happened.
This man, that says he's her Uncle, came over. And he's
still there. Rex (*heel!*) gloats at the flabbergasted Danielle.
(Real thought: We're still waiting.)
