From: "Linda N." <n042066@erols.com> Subject: PC:Update for Wed, Aug. 13, 1997 Date: 16 Aug 1997 01:15:19 GMT Sorry for the delay in getting this posted...house-buying is a very time-consuming process! Today's featured players: Karen, Gail, Mary, Joe, Grace, Frank, Julie, Mike THIS MARRIAGE NEEDS A TOE-TAG Karen has spent the time since her return to PC holed up in her apartment pigging out on junkfood. She is trying to figure out how to put on a good face when she goes back to work. She's not certain she can be convincing. She puts in a "long distance call from San Francisco" (from in front of her own refrigerator) to the hospital, leaving a message for Dr. Burgess to assure her she'll back on time. She hears the door open, throws the phone into the fridge, and hides behind the kitchen counter. Gail enters (she has borrowed the keys from the landlady) bearing a "casserole surprise." She's surprised to find Karen hiding in the kitchen. In a charming combination of grandmotherly concern and professional demeanor, Gail draws out of Karen the whole story of the disaster in SF. Karen asks her to be her grandmother rather than her psychiatrist and keep this private; she doesn't want it to be public knowledge. Gail warns about keeping secrets...Karen knows from personal experience that can be disastrous. Karen doesn't want her mother to know...she's always been down on Jagger. Gail encourages Karen to reach out to people, but in the meantime promises confidentiality, if not objectivity. [IMHO, their scenes together were excellent] IS IT JUST ME, OR DOES GRACE HAVE IDEAS ABOUT WHO JOE SHOULD REALLY BE SEEING? Mary and Joe are at the hospital, with Mary doing her motherly best to find out what's bugging him. Grace comes up and says it's either lack of sleep or the fairer sex. "Hmph," muses Joe, "you call that fair?" Mary wonders what is in the water at home; Frank seems to be suffering from the same problem. Later, during a break at the Recovery Room, Mary and Grace are chatting over a cup of coffee. Joe is at the bar and orders breakfast from the new temp bartender, Wally, who recognizes him from a picture at the bar. Unfortunately, Wally also recognizes Karen from her former career at Sonny's Paradise Lounge. Mike overhears this just as Joe is ready to go for Wally's neck and diffuses the situation, sending Wally to the kitchen to make the breakfast. Mike tells Joe he knows that Sonny gave Karen some bad advice when she was "just a kid," but she's overcome it and has made something of her life...and wishes others could follow her example. Joe marvels at how well she's handled everything, including Cooper cluing the other interns in on her past. Mike and Joe agree that she's terrific. Mike goes to flirt with Mary and they banter more about the recent poker match. Mike offers to walk Mary back to the hospital. She wants to know what he was talking w/Joe about, but Mike says there are some things mothers cannot fix. But Mary says, that doesn't mean they don't still want to try. Meanwhile, Grace has been observing Joe from the table. Methinks she would be more than willing to provide a consoling shoulder. [I'm really liking the Grace character and are so glad to see TPTB giving her some lines and part of the storyline. KEEP IT UP! Also, while the young interns are mostly interesting -note that I'm not complaining at all about Jake and Danielle missing from today's lineup :=)) -- I wish they would do more with showing us the developing relationship between Mike and Mary. Let us see them actually go out together.] HEY FRANK, DON'T DISS MY MAN JEEVES Frank and Julie are trying to work through their problems. Frank is still Mr. Rigid (oops, sorry, not like THAT), but does try to explain to her that he trusted her, confided in her things he'd never said before to anyone else, and feels betrayed and foolish. He now finds himself questioning everything she says, including the story about her brother's demise. Julie, while still going overboard in her apologies, begins to get some backbone and defend her choices. She explains that no one knows what it's like to be Julie Devlin. She didn't take out an ad announcing how much her father's net work was or "go online to discuss" her brother's death [thought that was a cute line], but that's because no one would understand that there are things about her life that are difficult. Frank says he would have tried to understand and now he doesn't know what to think. Julie tells him to think about THIS and lays a kiss on him that could make the nickname above apropo. She then calls him on the carpet for never once considering what things are like from her point of view...and he looks like he's seriously considering that she might have a good point there. AN EPIPHANY (is that how you spell it?) CAN BE MESSY Today's show ended in what I thought was a very classy scene. Karen has just said goodbye to Gail when the phone rings. She lets the machine get it. It's Joe. He tells her he's has just had an epiphany, but don't worry, no one was hurt and he cleaned up after himself. Actually he just called to tell her he's her friend and that he hopes everything went well in SF and that Jagger is a very lucky guy. Karen curls up on the couch, clutching a pillow, as Joe wishes her well and goodbye. ..............fade out................. -- Linda N.
