From: rika1@mindspring.com (Rika) Subject: PC: Update, Tuesday, 8/19/97 Date: Tue, 19 Aug 1997 23:04:16 GMT X-Server-Date: 19 Aug 1997 23:05:49 GMT PORT CHARLES UPDATE Tuesday, August 19, 1997 Today's Storylines: ------------------------ * Hangin' with Dr. Boardman * Physician, Heal Thyself * The Late Dr. Lambert * The Late Dr. Devlin/Morris/whatever HANGIN' WITH DR. BOARDMAN --------------------------------------------- Frank comes into The Recovery Room, which evidently serves a huge breakfast crowd. He has just gotten off work, and wishes Joe good luck on his first day in the surgical rotation. Matt, Jake, and Karen are there too, as is Chris, who is sitting alone. Frank wonders where Julie is. Joe reports seeing Eve out jogging this morning, and he figures she and Julie will come in together. Chris smugly remarks that it's lucky he was there to drive Julie home the night before. Frank is about to pick a fight with Chris for getting Julie drunk, but Joe restrains him. The interns head for the hospital. Karen recalls how Eve messed up her first day of the ER rotation; Matt pointedly reminds Karen that Eve's problem resulted from helping Karen's father. The interns arrive at the sixth floor for their surgical rotation. (Have I missed something here? Wasn't the sixth floor the place where the Cooper hostage situation happened? How come nobody mentioned it; I doubt they've been back to this place in the interim) They talk about the Quartermaine Fellowship; Chris suggests that they all know they want it, so they might as well cut out the pretense that they're all "palsy-walsy." Karen and Joe joke about this; Matt tells them he wants to be a surgeon, so if any of the "able-bodied" interns get in the way, he'll "run them down." (This is said with a good-natured smile). Karen figures Jake is the lucky one - he doesn't want to be a surgeon because he's a "research jock." Jake is about a million miles away and doesn't respond until they finally get his attention. When we return to them, the gang has called Julie and gotten her answering machine. Dr. Boardman, the senior surgical resident, is apparently late for rounds. Ellen assures them that rounds start when Boardman says they do, and not before. But if Eve and Julie don't get there in time, Ellen figures "they're toast." PHYSICIAN, HEAL THYSELF ------------------------------------- Lee Baldwin and Ellen are talking about the Cooper case. Ellen can't give it her full attention today - it's a "huge" day for the interns and they need her. Lee admires this attitude - he thinks anybody else would be "scrambling to save their own skin." (Anybody else would have the right idea....) Ellen is concerned by Lee's pessimistic tone. He explains that Cooper's family won't settle the lawsuit unless Ellen admits responsibility. Lee wants to know how Ellen intends to handle the situation. She asks what happens if she refuses to admit responsibility; Lee explains that the case will go to court. Ellen wishes she had taken herself off the case - that's what the rule book says to do. She never breaks the rules - but the one time she reacted emotionally, she's going to lose everything she worked for. Lee decides to give her some advice off the record. GH isn't as financially secure as it once was. Because of that, the hospital can't stand behind her the way they might have otherwise. He advises her to get her own lawyer. Ellen tries to stay cool, but she is brushing tears out of her eyes by the end of the scene. Matt eavesdrops on the end of Ellen and Lee's conversation. Lee offers to get Ellen some time off (she refuses), and assures her that the hospital will treat her fairly. She knows, though, that she needs to take care of herself (it's about time - Kevin, Matt, and probably strangers on the street have been telling her that for weeks....). Lee asks if Ellen knows a good lawyer. Meddling Matt abandons all pretense and wheels over, asking, "Why? Does she need one?" Matt tells Lee his theory about Cooper; Lee is excited at the thought and asks for proof, while Ellen tries to get Matt to mind his own business. Lee leaves; Matt points out that Lee's job is to do what's best for the hospital. Ellen again asks Matt to stay out of it; by now you'd think she'd know to give up on that idea. He doesn't see why she doesn't want to prove that Cooper faked his own seizure. Ellen, in a Bones McCoy moment, insists, "I'm a *doctor*, not Dick Tracy!" She thanks Matt for his support, even if he is "a lowly intern." She suggests that he'd better concentrate on his career, while she works on her own. Matt tells her they can do both - "it's called multi-tasking." Ellen talks to a nurse about one of her patients, and is stunned to learn that the patient's husband transferred the patient to Mercy. Ellen figures out it has to do with word of mouth about Cooper's case. Meddling Matt wheels up in time to hear part of this exchange. Ellen tries to get him focused on his own career; she wonders what she has to do to get through to him. "I'm wondering the same thing about you," he retorts, pointing out that if people are withdrawing patients from the hospital, she can't afford to wait any longer to fight back. Dr. Boardman walks up, and they abruptly stop their argument. Boardman asks where the interns are - or was Ellen "too busy dealing with her legal problems." (Oh, my, we've got a real sweetheart here.) That remark finally convinces Ellen that she needs to do something. Apparently when Dr. Boardman talks, people listen.... THE LATE DR. LAMBERT ---------------------------------- Eve, dressed and ready to leave for the hospital, is tiptoeing around the living room of the apartment while Julie sleeps sprawled on the sofa. Eve whispers to Julie to try - sort of - to wake her up. Julie groans, "Leave me alone," and Eve grins, responding, "You got it, princess!" She figures it's Julie's turn to mess up this time. She heads upstairs for breakfast, to find Scott Baldwin standing in the Scanlon kitchen. Eve orders Scott out of the house. She figures that, since he ruined her first day as an intern, he's going to do the same thing this time. She thinks it's part of a plot to keep her out of the running for the Quartermaine Fellowship. He insists that she's being paranoid. Scott banters with her about her choice of breakfast, and then gets to the point - he wants to know if she knows anything about Danielle. Eve can't really help him much - "It's kind of hard to have an intelligent conversation with the woman when she's hanging all over Jake." (And even when she's not, from what we've seen....). He offers her a ride to the hospital. She laughs and says, "No way," but then she stops him as he's about to leave, explaining that she was going to take the bus. ("I haven't met my millionaire yet," she explains. Scott grins and recommends, "Keep lookin'." Very cute.). She decides to "let" him take her to the hospital ("I'm honored," he responds), but hopes she doesn't regret it. (You can almost hear the Knell of Doom at this point....) Sure enough. We next see Scott and Eve in his car, which has apparently broken down on the way to the hospital. (At least, if they're still sitting in the driveway at the Scanlon's, I don't know WHY Eve just doesn't take the bus as she planned, instead of sitting there freaking out at Scott.) Scott promises he'll get the car started, and he squints, bemused, at the instrument panel. (Uh, Scott, you put the key in the ignition, if that helps....). Eve figures now she'll never be a surgeon; Scott tells her it requires a bit of selfless dedication, and "you might want to lose those fancy fingernails of yours." Eve can't see what a manicure has to do with it; besides, why do people assume beauty and intelligence are mutually exclusive? Eve gets out of the car and shouts for help to no avail; then she gets back in and honks the horn. Scott stops her: "Don't ever honk my horn." (Gee, is THAT what they're calling it these days?) Then get me to work, Eve suggests. Scott claims to be working on it (though as far as I can see he's just sitting there staring at the instrument panel, perhaps willing the car to start with his mind). Eve thinks Scott is bad luck for her; Scott bets her $50 that he can get her to the hospital on time. When we return to them, Scott is searching for the hood latch, and for some reason he is looking towards the back seat to find it. He figures none of this would have happened if he'd had his truck - this is a new car and he doesn't know much about it yet. Eve wants to know where the car phone is - he's a "zillionaire", so he must have one. He doesn't, but Scott whips out his cell phone - and discovers he doesn't have service. (Sheesh - did they drive to the hospital by way of Outer Slobovia?) No owner's manual in the glove compartment, either, says Eve - but Scott leans across and finds it. Eve is furious that "a rich guy like you" thinks her situation is so funny. Scott remarks that she thinks a lot about money, and she assures him that it's true. She has struggled and worked to get where she is, but he probably wouldn't know about that. He assures her that he does know what that's like, and he also knows what it's like to try to forget the past. But he thinks it's better to laugh about it than to whine. Eve insists that she doesn't whine. "Whatever," Scott responds, grabbing her chin. He promises to get her to the hospital on time, and if he doesn't, he'll build a new hospital and hire her. "Trust me." Eve tells him she'd be an idiot to fall for that line. She gets out of the car, with Scott in hot pursuit. THE LATE AND WET DR. DEVLIN/MORRIS/WHATEVER --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Frank runs downstairs to Julie and Eve's apartment and finds Julie asleep on the couch. He has a bag of ice which he places on her forehead; she tries to get him to stop. She wants to sleep - or die. He pulls her to her feet; she feels extremely sick. He gives an ice cube to suck on and tells her she's hung over. She sinks back down to the couch; again, Frank tries to get her to wake up, reminding her how hard she's worked to be a doctor, and how important the day is. Finally he gets through by yelling, "Julie Morris, code blue, Room 5, stat!" She sits up and barks a medical order - and then lies back down when she realizes it was a trick. Frank has to resort to desperate measures. He runs to the bathroom and turns on the shower; then he picks Julie up off the couch and carries her into the bathroom, subjecting her to a cold shower until she agrees she's awake. She wonders why she drank the martinis - Frank suggests it was to forget what a jerk he was. She insists that she was drinking because she couldn't stand lying to him. She apologizes, and he apologizes for judging her. "You don't hate me anymore?" she asks, and he whispers, "Not even close." Significant kissing ensues - this might be a good time for someone to mention "surgical rounds," because this isn't looking like it's going to help Julie to be on time. They both wind up in the shower, kissing passionately (fully clothed, in case anybody's wondering). ----------------------- by Rika, 1/2 of the Tuesday Update Team
