PORT CHARLES - GUIDE TO ETIQUETTE (OR LACK OF IT)

In the Interns Lounge there is a close-up on a flyer proclaiming
that Bennett Devlin will be holding seminars that all the interns
should attend. Eve is studying it with considerable annoyance.
As she turns away, Chris pulls it off the bulletin board. As they
both go to sit on the couch, he reads it aloud. He points out
that it took him all of ten seconds to read it, and that Eve had
been glaring at it for three minutes. "What's it to you?" she
asks him. He wants to know if she's going to share her
theory that he brought Bennett Devlin to town. She might,
she might not. He wants to know if she's afraid of Devlin.
"Being a lady and a professional I cannot tell you what I think
of you in this environment," Chris ignores the insult and asks
what's up? Is it a personal thing between her and Bennett Devlin?

Etiquette Violation: Chris; removing a public notice. No doubt
to have Bennett autograph it at a later date.

At the sixth floor Nurses' station Joe tells Jake that he missed a
lot of fun on the first day of surgical rotation. (Gosh, it seems
like three weeks ago.) Jake doesn't respond to the half-hearted
joke. Joe demands a response. Jake grunts, "right," and tries
to ignore the pesky Joe. Joe persists, saying he's sick of Jake's
attitude. Jake suggests that Joe go somewhere else. Joe asks
what's going on?

Etiquette Violation: Joe; inquiring too closely on a personal matter.

At the lighthouse Karen tells Scott that he should contact Jake if
it's about gene research. Scott asks what kind of research Jake does.
Gene therapy and gene mutation, Karen explains. She offers to
mention it to Jake and Scott says no, she shouldn't. She asks why
not, and he says he appreciates her help, but not to mention this
to Jake.

Etiquette Violation: Scott; offers Karen no refreshments.

Lucy wants Tony to swear that the egg he implanted in Lucy
was Dom's. He asks if she's implying that he made some
kind of mistake. No, she trusts him completely. She just
wants him to be his perfect self. She just wants him to swear
that everything happened the way they said it happened then
everything will be all right. "I can't do that Lucy," says Tony.

Etiquette Violation: No chaperone.

Opening Montage
Etiquette Violation: Still no Sigmund, and no Rex for that matter.

Lucy is aghast. She gets up and complains that first he was mad
at her for even suggesting he could make a mistake, and now he
says he could have made a mistake. She gives him a run down of
situation. Someone is trying to prove that Dom's sister is Serena's
mother. Katherine is involved in this? Tony asks. (Showing how
much out of the loop of common knowledge Stefan is.) No, Lucy
explains, another sister. "Her father could have learned the
meaning of birth control," she rambles. If Tony swears that
was Dom's egg then they would have no case. He says he can
swear that he removed an egg from Dom, but he can't swear
it was the same one, because he sent the egg out to be fertilized
by a specialist. He asks Lucy if the woman is saying why Dom
would have done such a thing. She tells him it was because Dom
was supposedly concerned about transferring the cancer to her.
Which was true. Tony wonders if it could be argued that Dom told
the specialist this. Lucy doesn't want to hear that. She just wants
Tony to swear the egg was Dom's so that Serena won't be taken
away from Scott. Lie, she tells him. He can't.

Etiquette Violation: Tony wearing white after Labor day.

Back at the Lighthouse, Scotty tells Karen that he doesn't want
there to be any gossip that can get back to Serena. She agrees
not to tell Jake put suggests he get someone to do a DNA test.
He says he will and that he's sorry he yelled. She tells him he
didn't. (He really didn't yell.) Karen thinks he's doing a good
job of keeping things together and Serena walks in as an
example. Serena wants to know if she has to have a shot at
her physical. Karen says she should be brave, because it means
she'll get to go to her new school. Serena is enthusiastic. The
school has a bunny rabbit. Which Karen agrees is cool. And
Serena can bring Sigmund for show and tell.(Isn't it about time
to migrate?) Karen agrees that is double cool. She tells Serena
that she used to go to that school and they had gerbils then. The
gerbils had babies and Karen got to take one home. Serena thinks
that is "triple cool". But before she can go to school she has to
go to the hospital and have her shots. They skip out the door.
Scott immediately calls Mac. And tells him that Danielle's fiancee
Jake is a DNA expert and is surely mixed up with Rex.

Etiquette Violation: Serena; not asking Sigmund's opinion about
show and tell.

Jake says there's nothing wrong, but Joe persists (note etiquette
violation above). He points out that Jake took off and that
Danielle, who "used to be attached to him at the lips," was nowhere
to be seen. "And your conversation which was minimal at best has
now dried into a stony silence." (Rather eloquent for Joe "the only
moron around here is you" Scanlon.) But nothing's wrong? Jake
admits that his parents have been having legal problems. But Joe
won't settle for that. Jake stood up for him at the review board for
him, and therefore it's open season on Jake's problem. Further he
and Karen have decided that the interns should, "help each other
survive". (Yeah, unless you're someone who disagrees with Joe
at any point.) Just then Boardman walks up and says, "If you're
giving Dr. Marshak tips from the Tool Time school of surgery,
don't waste your time." Dr. Marshak is skipping surgical rotation.
He has more important things to do. Jake tries to give him an
explanation, but Boardman doesn't want to hear it. Jake guesses
that Boardman, "is lucky he doesn't have parents who count on
him for everything." Boardman agrees to give him two minutes.

Etiquette Violation: Jake: Making assumptions about someone's
parental obligations.

Joe, sensing that this is a little too personal, even for him, tries
to leave, but Boardman tells Joe to stay, because he has something
to discuss with him. Jake explains that his parents needed him
because they had a legal problem and don't speak English very
well. He went home and took care of it. Boardman asks to be
spared the gory details. Jake wasn't giving them. He can now
give Boardman his undivided attention. (Liar. Rexie and Danielle
haven't gone away, and aren't likely to.) Boardman points out
that it is the patients that need him and Boardman has no need to
work with Jake. Jake asserts that is a mistake. He points out that
he was top of his class and has recommendations from the surgical
studies faculty, a couple of whom went to med school with
Boardman. Boardman seems pleased that Jake did research on
him, but he notes that Jake isn't interested in surgery, but is a
"Lab rat". Jake maintains that future of medicine is in research.
He believes being bounced from the program will jeopardize
his career. He then says that Boardman is the best and he wants
to work with him. Having hit Boardman's Achilles heel, he is
given another chance. Boardman starts to walk off, when Joe
asks why he wanted to speak to him. Boardman pretends to
have forgotten and leaves. Joe says he know why Boardman
did that and Jake agrees that Boardman wanted him to beg in
front of an audience. Jake is tired of being pushed around.

Etiquette Violation: Boardman; letting Joe participate in an
adult conversation.

Chris tells Eve that she's been touchy ever since Bennett Devlin
came to town. Eve says it's because Julie's phone rings day and
night. Not getting her beauty sleep? Chris asks. No one wants
someone's father hanging around, says Eve. Chris says he
wouldn't mind someone rich and influential like Devlin hanging
around. Eve thinks that if Chris is really hot for Julie he should
sympathize with what she's going through. She wants to make it
on her own and that's hard to do with Dad hanging around
giving seminars. Chris questions her concern for Julie. If he
wants to score with Julie, she suggests that Chris run Bennett
Devlin out of town. Chris suggests that if Eve wants to score with
Dr. Devlin she should be perky and eager. Eve doesn't want to
score with him. (Been there; done that) She'd rather make it on
her own rather than have "some controlling, manipulative, egoti..."
Bennett Devlin comes into the room. Chris introduces himself
and asks if Dr. Devlin has met Eve. Bennett says that, "You and
that kitchen both made a vivid impression on me." "Did they
have luxury condos for the interns way back when," Eve shoots
back. Bennett says that he had a room a lot like this one, but
that they don't want to hear his old "war stories". Eve says she
does. "What was it like back in the good old days. Oh, I'm sorry,
that didn't come out quite right," she smirked. Bennett asks if
they've seen Julie. Chris offers to go and page her. He leaves
and Bennett says Eve is being indiscreet and that she has no
reason to be antagonistic. Yes, there is, she feels like it. "What
are you doing staying in Port Charles, Ben?"

Etiquette Violation: Bennett Devlin; Not acknowledging Chris'
sucking-up efforts.

Serena and Karen come back to the Lighthouse. Serena is
wearing a stethoscope. She holds it up to Karen's stomach.
"Hello, is there a baby in there?" Karen laughs. No, not yet.
Scott comes in off the porch. He asks how everything went.
Serena says she didn't cry. Scott asks Karen when he'll be
getting her bill. She asks when Joe will be getting his. He makes
a comment on being behind on paperwork, and things will
change now that Rhonda's working for him. Karen is skeptical
about her mother's organizational abilities. Scott advises that
she take it easy on her mother. Karen starts to leave and
Serena thanks her for the shot... not. Karen asks if Serena wants
to do another sleep over some time. They say goodbye. Serena
asks her father if he wants to play doll house with her. He says
yes, and she says that she's happy and wants to stay in Port
Charles forever.

Etiquette Violation: Karen; not knocking. (But then no one does.)

Lucy is still trying to convince Tony. The future of a family is
at stake. He should lie so Scott won't take Serena and run. Lucy
doesn't want to lose her again. He can't imagine what it's like.
He reminds her that he can, and she remembers that he lost his
little girl, B.J.. Lucy says that Tony should understand and want
to help prevent strangers from taking a little girl from her Daddy.
It's a good lie. Tony refuses, sensibly pointing out that his lie
would be quickly discovered even with the most superficial
investigation. (That would be Mac.) Lucy should ask the fertility
specialist to guarantee the specimen. Lucy agrees and Tony gives
her the Doctor's name, Sheila Bissell, who is now in Washington
State. Lucy thanks him.

Etiquette Violation: The writers; for taking four scenes to make
a point that could have been made in one.

Bennett tells Eve that he thought she'd made it clear that their
plans no longer concerned one another. She says he made it clear
he didn't like her living with his daughter. She doesn't like him
living in Port Charles. He tells her at that he didn't stay to
reclaim her. He couldn't, she says. He says that's debatable.
She asks if it doesn't bother him that Julie doesn't want him
there. He doesn't believe it. "Ben she was so desperate to get
away from YOU that she's telling lies for the first time in her
life." Bennett tells Eve to calm down, somebody could walk in.
Eve points out that's what he's risking. "Is it so important to
you to keep your daughter under your thumb, that you'll risk
her finding out that her roommate was one of your series of very
young girlfriends." Bennett says Julie will never find out. Eve
says that he no longer gets to tell her what to wear and mainly
can't tell her what to say. He says he'll do what he needs to do.
"Julie!" Eve exclaims. She's come into the room while they're
talking.

Joe wants to know why the Hospital lets Boardman play head
games with them. (How can they resist?) Jake tells him they
don't care. Joe thinks it's counterproductive. (Nonsense. It
weeds out the wimpy ones.) If it had anything to do with
medicine he'd put up with it. Jake says lots of people play
head games, not just Doctors. "I hate em all," he declares and
stalks off. Karen walks up, with Boardman close behind
badgering her. Boardman is pressing her for the answer to a
hypothetical situation and Karen is insistent that more
information is necessary to make a correct diagnosis. When
Boardman continues to press her, Joe leaps to her defense.
Boardman tells him to butt out. "Dr. Wexler has to deal with
her own lack of competence by herself." "It has yet to be
established that I am incompetent." "Not to me," says Boardman.
"Now get the chart and get me the answer now." He snaps
his fingers at her. Joe hits his low boiling point and threatens
to break Boardman's fingers if he ever snaps them at anyone
again. Karen tells Joe to stop it.

Etiquette Violation: Joe; and his finger-breaking proclivities.
(The proper action would be slapping him with a surgical glove
and challenging him to a duel.)

Lucy tells Scotty that Tony can't swear about the eggs
whereabouts, because part of the procedure was done by a
fertility expert and that he gave her that Doctor's name
and location. She shows Scott the paper. If they can
get her cooperation they'll blow Danielle's story out of
the water. Scott is willing to fly the Doctor in. Lucy calls
her, and, as she's waiting, Scott tells her his suspicions
about Jake and his role in the plot as a DNA expert. The
person that Lucy reaches tells her that Dr. Bissell is dead.
Lucy wants to know how she died. (Rexitis?)

Etiquette Violation: Scott; talking while Lucy is on the phone.
