Update for Wednesday, October 9th, 1997, in which not much happens, but
we do have brief glimpses of two of my favourite PC characters, Mike and
Eve, and we learn one amazing piece of news:

Julie's mother won second prize in a flower show!

In the hospital at the ER desk

Eve asks Grace if she can read the chicken scratch writing on a
patient's chart. Grace replies that it's Bennet Devlin's initials.
Eve's "not so happy" response: "Damn him!".

In Frank and Joe's driveway

Julie and Frank are out back of the house discussing Frank's upcoming
interview with the recruiter from Colsen College in Chicago. Julie
wishes him well. While Julie is at the hospital today, she plans to
talk to Chris to find out if he ratted out Karen. Frank teases Julie
about her friendship with Chris. Julie doesn't believe in judging
anyone until she knows the facts. Julie declares that if Chris
sandbagged Karen, he won't be her friend for long.

In the hallway at the hospital

Chris tells Devlin that "their" patient seems to be doing well. Bennett
doesn't really think that Chris has a right to use the collective "our"
when referring to the patient. Chris starts talking about his internal
actualization process: picture it and it will be. Bennett looks on with
disbelief, [I'm with you Devlin!], but says he's used that process as
well. Devlin tells Chris about Frank's job offer in Chicago. Chris
implies that Devlin may have something to do with this because Bennett
lives close to the windy city. Chris says that Julie will miss Frank if
he leaves town, and he offers to look out for her. Devlin asks what
Chris knew about him before he came to town. Chris's response is about
his reputation as a surgeon. Bennett's veiled threat: What would Chris?
think he would do to an intern who tried to use his daughter to gain
some kind of advantage?

Back in Frank and Joe's backyard

Frank enters (Julie's left) and Frank and Joe ride each other as
brother's do. They shoot some hoops. They talk about the upcoming
interview and Frank says he doesn't really want the new how happy he is
with his present job, his house, his life. Joe adds on "and Julie?".
Bob Dorsey from Colsen College shows up. Introductions all 'round. Joe
leaves and Dorsey and Frank discuss Frank's football career at Notre
Dame. Dorsey does a sell job on the job. Frank tells him he can't
imagine an offer that would make him accept. Dorset bets he make him an
offer he can't refuse.

Mike's bar

Matt has a flashback to a discussion with Dr. Boardman about equipment
that can be used to get a paraplegic to the same level as the operating
table (table down or person up). Boardman thinks Matt's limitations
will prevent him being effective in the OR, but he eventually says he
will take the pamphlets. He sympathizes with Matt, who of course
doesn't want Boardman's pity.

In "real time", Mike (yeah!) approaches Matt and Matt talks to Mike
about Boardman. Matt says it's like talking to a brick wall. Mike
encourages him to find a better method than banging his head against the
bricks.

In the on-call room

Boardmen is giving Karen her "alternate duties" because she's not in the
surgical rotation. This includes sorting every IV bag by size and
content. Karen offers to do it by expiry date as well. She'll let him
know when she's finished. Boardman leaves, Julie enters from the shower
room with an "OMG, you have to clean out the supply closet?", but offers
to help. Karen says she wants the glory for herself. Julie reaffirms
with Karen that she believes that Chris stole her letter and took the
info to Dr. Burgess. Julie wonders why, and Karen hypothesizes it would
mean less competition for the Quartermain residency. Karen says she
tried to keep her problems at home, but now everyone knows. Julie can't
believe that Chris would do this. Karen asks about Frank. Julie says
she wants what's best for him, and if this means going to Chicago, so be
it.

In the hallway with the two slime balls

Chris resents Devlin's accusation about his reasons for getting close to
Julie. Says he really cares for her and offers her his protection.
Devlin wants to know why he thinks she needs protecting. Chris says
it's because she's naive, and that her crazy notions of the "working
poor ideals" will give her problems in the long run. Devlin wonders why
Chris thinks he would like Chris any better than Frank, Julie can make
up her own mind. Chris asks, if that's true, why did you arrange to
have Frank offered the Chicago job. Devlin says he will help Chris
professionally, but that he should tread more carefully when it comes to
Julie. End of conversation.

Chris leaves, Eve comes up to Devlin. Why did he interfere with her
paperwork on her patient? Devlin says he corrected her mistake on the
chart. Eve wants him to stay away from her. Bennett enquires about the
lack of gratitude for having done her a favour. Eve wants him to leave
Julie alone as well, and accuses him of cooking something up with
Chris. Devlin tells her to go to the powder room, splash some water on
her face, and to calm down. He won't always be around to protect her.

Scanlon backyard again

Frank tells Joe about the offer from the college. BMW plus twice what
he's making now. Joe thinks he would be crazy not to take the job, but
Frank still hasn't been convinced.

In the on-call room

Eve enters, Karen and Julie are still there. They ask if Eve is OK, to
which they don't get much of a response. Karen and Julie continue their
conversation — Julie thinks that she and Frank will be OK living in two
different cities. Karen doesn't think she is the one to talk to about
how to do successful long-distance relationships. Devlin enters. He
has the news we've all been waiting for — Julie's mother won second
prize in the flower show! Julie tells her dad about the recruiter from
the college who has come to see Frank. Devlin thinks that is terrific —
in the background Eve slams her locker and says she's leaving. She
does. Devlin tells Karen and Julie that Eve's temper should be watched
if she wants to be a successful doctor.

In Mike's

Matt asks Mike how he would deal with Boardman. Mike says he's not the
guy to ask, as he would lose his temper and knock the guy on his butt.
Matt thinks maybe the best way may be to go around the brick wall rather
than through it.

At the hospital desk

Eve tells Grace she's going out, there's something she needs to do.

In the on-call room

Devlin and Julie make a racquetball date for 6pm. They banter, he
leaves. Karen remarks they seem to be getting along well, Julie says
it's because he's not being a control freak and because he is being
nicer to Frank. Karen goes to the shower area. Chris enters. Karen
pokes her head in, let's him know she's there — she wouldn't want to
violate his right to privacy and overhear something he might regret.
Julie enquires of Chris whether or not he stole her letter. Chris
offers to tell them what *really* happened [yeah, right!].

At a bar (which I thought at first was Mike's, but then wasn't sure,
given who Devlin was meeting)

Devlin enters *a bar*. He is meeting with the college recruiter,
Dorsey. Ask him how it went with Frank. Recruiter says he left him
salivating.

In the back yard

Frank reiterates his contentment with his life to Joe.

In *the bar*

The recruiter says he offered Frank a job no one would turn down.
Devlin wants to know what Frank says. Since Frank is only "thinking it
over", Devlin's not yet satisfied.

In the Scanlon yard

Frank just doesn't want to leave Julie, but admits to the job intriguing
him. Joe tells him he deserves this, because of the sacrifices he has
made for the rest of the family already. Frank doesn't want ribbons
pinned on him. Joe wants him to admit that this is a dream come true.

In *the bar*

Devlin wants to know if Frank "bought it". The recruiter replies that
yes, Frank will soon only be a memory to his daughter.

In the backyard

The boys are playing basketball again. Eve shows up, but isn't she
supposed to be on call? She says she's there to stop Frank from making
the biggest mistake of his life for all the right reasons. Frank wants
to know what she's talking about. Eve replies, "Get any good job offers
lately?".
