PORT CHARLES - LE MORTE DE DANIELLE

At The Recovery Room. Mike asks Chris and Eve what they're
celebrating. They explain that they're happy because they've
had a Boardman-free week. Chris and Eve want a fine wine with
dinner. Mike offers them vintage Chablis in a jug and suggests that
if they want a choice in a fine wine to go to the Port Charles Grill.
To flirt with Eve he gives in and goes to get a bottle of Sauvignon
Blanc in the back frig. (Not a decent red wine in the place... some
bar.) Chris mentions that they are one week closer to becoming
real doctors and raking in the big bucks. They toast to that day,
(With water.) Eve says she's going to hit the Paris boutiques as
soon as she's rich, instead of shopping in Wyndham's bargain
basement. Chris is semi-disgusted that she shops there. She
comments that "Some of us have to scrimp, not like the rich Dr.
Ramsey." He asks if that's what she thinks about him. Sure
everyone knows he comes from money. She doesn't think he's ever
been denied anything. He objects to her making it sound like he's
a spoiled rich kid. Isn't he? He avoids giving her any actual
personal history, and says that he knows how to do a load of
laundry. Apparently Eve doesn't. A beeper goes off and they both
check. It's Eve's, she has to rush off to the hospital. But Mike has
only just brought the wine and now Chris will have to drink it himself.
Eve says Chris owes her for giving her that disgusting kiss. He says
she went along with it. She did, but Eve knows a fake kiss from a
real kiss.

At Mario's Bennett tells Julie he's sorry Julie has to hear all this.
Nicole points out that Julie doesn't have to stay if she doesn't want
to. Julie doesn't get the hint. Bennett tells Julie that he doesn't
think Nicole's serious about divorcing him. Nicole says she's deadly
serious. Julie suggests that Nicole take more time to think it over.
Daddy's sorry for what he did. (Yeah, sorry he got caught.) Bennett
pushes their problems off on Buddy again. They've both been
avoiding each other since then. (For ten years?) Nicole's still not
buying. She suffered as much as he did and never slept with another
man. She tried to hold the family together by herself and now she's
done trying. He agrees it's his turn to try. "Too little, too late," is
her reply.

Karen, Joe, Matt and Ellen are working on Danielle, as Frank looks
on. Jake bursts into the room. Frank fills him in on Danielle's
injuries. Jake aggressively wants to help, but Karen says he can't
He'll observe. Jake flashes back to being in bed with Danielle. Back
in the present Jake stands at the end of Danielle's bed and looks kind
of sad. Karen leaves the room and goes out to the nurses' station.
She calls Scott and tells him she knows where Danielle is. Scott,
who is munching on a green apple, thinks that great. No, it isn't
Danielle's been in a car accident and is in grave condition. He'll
be right there. Karen hangs up. Scott exclaims, "Rex!" and throws
the phone at the wall.

*****
Our Flashback: We remember Danielle telling Jake that she couldn't
give him her phone number at her "night job" because the boss didn't
allow any personal phone calls.

Matt and Ellen talk Doctor Speak over Danielle. Karen tries to
get Jake to leave. He says it's his fault because he should have
protected Danielle. She didn't want to do bad things, Rex made
her. Jake starts trying to give his own medical advice, and Ellen
suggests he stop. Frank pushes him back and advises him to
hold up the wall. Jake flashes back to when he proposed to
Danielle. Back in the here and now tears are appearing in his
eyes. (He should be careful, he's in danger of suffer from CFS,
Chronic Flashback Syndrome. Now known as Stefan Cassadine
disease.)

*****
Our Flashback: We remember Danielle at the Nurses' Ball, wearing
that cute little janitor's outfit and picking Lucy's diamond studded
dress out of the wastebasket.

Nicole comes into the living room. Mike asks her if she'd like a
drink or dinner. She says both. He asks if her husband's joining
her. (Why? Is she coming apart?) Not if she can help it. Chris
stands up and bids Mrs. Devlin a good evening. Nicole is pleased
to see him. He asks her to join him. She accepts. His bottle of
wine is nearly empty. He tells her they keep the good stuff in the
back and should he order another bottle. He should.

Bennett tells Julie that he appreciates her support. Julie hates
to see her parents thirty year marriage go down the drain. How
will he convince Nicole not to file for divorce. Bennett thinks
Nicole will drop the idea once she's calmed down. Julie's not
so sure.

Chris philosophizes to Nicole, and quotes "The Road Not Taken"
by Frost. Nicole is surprised. Does Chris like Frost? "Never met
the guy," he says, deadpan. Nicole takes him seriously for a
second. He admits that he couldn't resist the straight line. He
pours more wine for them both. Nicole likes that poem now, but
she didn't used to. Nicole tells Chris that his girlfriend Eve isn't
her favorite person. He denies the relationship. He says the kiss
was just blowing off steam. (Makes you wonder what he does when
he's truly stressed.) Eve is just a co-worker. (And his roomie, but
he doesn't mention that.) He doesn't know how Bennett could
have preferred Eve to Nicole. Nicole thanks him for the little white
lie. He's kind and smart for one so young. He tells her he's been
shaving for three months now. She thanks him again for taking her
mind off her troubles. He thanks her for reminding him that there is
more to life than medicine. Mike offers them coffee. Nicole refuses
she doesn't want to stick around and run into people from GH.
Chris offers to take her elsewhere for coffee and she accepts.
(After a bottle and a half we hope Chris was planning on a taking
a cab.)

Conklin and Scott come into the ER and ask Karen where
Danielle is. Can they talk to her. Karen says they can't. Conklin
asks what the prognosis is. She's going into surgery and it doesn't
look good.

*****
Our Flashback: We remember Danielle going to visit Dominique's
grave and swearing to never do anything to hurt Serena, and she
wept at her sister's grave.
*****

Chris escorts Nicole back to her hotel room. Chris says he had
a terrific evening. Nicole says that, but for him she'd have been
crying alone in her beer. He hasn't heard that saying in years.
She tells him that he'll get those sort of gems all the time hanging
out with the geriatric crowd. He tells her to stop. She asks him to
come in for coffee. He accepts. They get in and she says they'll
order from room service. (Promptly showing that the coffee thing
was just a ploy.) He suggests they just check out what's in the
honor bar. They find white wine with twist off caps. (Is there
no red wine anywhere in this town?) The phone rings. It's Bennett.
He asks if she's calmed down. Tells her she should consider their
wonderful marriage. He wasn't when he slept with Eve. She hangs
up on him. She apologizes to Chris, but he insists she has nothing
to apologize for. She tells Chris that she's asked for a divorce.

Scott tells Conklin that Danielle wanted to make a confession.
Conklin tells him that he better pray that Danielle pulls through.
Karen tells them that Danielle is still unconscious and is being
prepped. Scott insists that they talk to Danielle as soon as she's
able. Jake overhears this and accuses Scott of being a vulture.
He thinks Rex and Scott are sucking the life out of Danielle.
Scott says Jake has it wrong. Danielle wanted to talk to the FBI.
Jake says Scott should leave Danielle alone. Scott says his
daughter's life is at stake. Jake says Danielle's life is at stake and
then grabs Scott. Conklin breaks it up and Matt tells Jake to get a
grip, he's not doing Danielle any good. Jake moans that he's never
done Danielle any good. The accident is his fault. He had her come
back to town. Karen says that Danielle came back because she
wanted to, because she loved Jake. Jake moans again. He repaid
her love by hurting her. He flashes back to throwing Danielle out
of the apartment. (The first time.) He whines to Karen that the
last time he spoke to Danielle he told her he hated her, what if
she dies and he never gets to tell her different.

*****
Our flashback: We remember when Rex showed Danielle his
little poison kit and she believed he had poisoned Jake in ten
seconds flat. You can fool some of the people all of the time
and fool Danielle every single time.

Nicole pours out her troubles to Chris. She's been the good
Doctor's wife, keeping the home fires burning while Bennett
was lighting his own fires. She stuck it out. While Bennett
grew successful, she grew older. A sympathetic Chris tells her
she didn't deserve that. The phone rings again and the two of
them stand in the middle of the room and listen to it. Danielle
says to let it ring. She starts to cry. The ringing stops. She
apologizes again, and he tells her not to. She kisses him and
then he takes her face in his hands and kisses her.

Sitting with Karen in the waiting area, Scott says that Danielle
is the only one who can get his daughter back. Karen has to
make sure she gets through this. Karen says okay and leaves.
Rex strides into the ER and asks Matt for information on Danielle.
Matt tells him she's being prepped for surgery. Scott comes up
and says he can't believe Rex would come here. His niece has
been injured, Rex says, all innocence. Scott asks him how that
happened. Jake burst into the ER again and accuses Rex of
ruining Danielle's life. Rex will see Danielle over his dead body.
(And how long would that take to arrange?) Karen (messenger
girl for the day) tells Jake that Danielle is asking for him. He
runs into Danielle's room. Joe tells him to make it quick because
they're almost ready in surgery. Jake takes Danielle's hand. (That
would leave her with one.) He tells her he's there. She complains
that she's cold. She lost a lot of blood. If I don't make it, she starts
to say and he insists she will make it. He tells her he loves her and
she tells him she loves him. She says she never lied about that. He
says he loved her since the second he laid eyes on her. She thanks
him and he says they have a life to live together. (Would that be
One Life to Live?) He declares his love again and tells her to hold
on. The doctors come and wheel her gurney away. "I love you
more than life itself," he tells her. He watches her through the glass
of the doors, and then begins to cry.

*****
Our Flashback: Danielle having run away to New York flashes
back to meeting Jake. While she does so her ice cream cone
melts all over her hand.
