Scott wants a sidebar and is shouting that - the judge wants Scott to be
quiet, his Dad makes him do so.  Lee requests a sidebar and the judge
agrees.  After Lee returns to Scott with some bad news - the prosecution
has a surprise witness who will testify that Scott has been buying drugs.
Lee tries to get the judge to declare a mistrial on the grounds that the
statement about drug use was purposely inflammatory.  The judge denies
the motion but does agree to a continuance so the defense can plan for the
surprise witness.  Scott tells Lee about the hallucination episode and his
being arrested.  Outside the court, Garcia tells Scott, Lee, and Jake that the
surprise witness is a drug dealer who is testifying to lessen his own sentence.
They decide to get Mac to get something on him.  Garcia says it'll be tough
to discredit him - his testimony has lead to 3 convictions already.

Gail tries to get Serena to talk about school, have a snack, have a friend
over, anything.  But Serena is interested only in seeing Mommy.  Later,
Serena tells Gail she wants some cookies that Mommy told her that Gail
made.  She goes off to ask Mommy where Gail's missing address book is.
Disturbed, Gail calls Kevin for his professional advice on the situation.
Kevin agrees to come right over and talk to Serena.  Serena tells him about
talking to Mommy and her saying that everything will be all right.  Kevin
thinks her seeing her Mommy at this time is perfectly normal.  Serena tells
Gail that Mommy told her the address book is on top of a 7 foot cabinet -
Gail asks if she's playing a trick on her Grandma, but Kevin points out
Serena couldn't put something that high.  Gail reaches up and it's there!

Karen is talking to Joe at work - stressed over feeling helpless about Scott's
situation.  Joe invites her to go to his friend's secluded cabin over NYE to
relax.  Karen doesn't think it's a good idea.  She verbally stumbles around
for a while, then finally admits that she's worried they'll give in to their
feelings and have sex.  (Karen was very cute in this scene - trying not to
come right out and say it.)  He teases her that he was only thinking of sleigh
rides, walks in the woods, and that sort of thing.  She is saved by being
paged, but promises to think about going.

In the intern lounge, Julie notices that Karen seems happy.  She tells her
about Joe's invitation.  They discuss that neither have them have been
getting any from their respective Scanlons.  They segue into talking about
the Devlin parents - Karen is shocked that Nicole slept with Chris.  Julie
tells her about losing it in front of Dr. Burgess, Karen suggests she try to
make piece with Chris and Eve, for the sake of her job.  Julie agrees - though
she'd rather eat a worm.  Later, Julie is trying to deal with an upset patient.
Eve offers to help and distracts the patient so Julie can retape her IV.  The
woman is taken down to X-Ray.  Julie apologizes to Eve for being so nasty,
Eve accepts a truce.  Just then, Eve is served with a subpoena to testify
against Scott.

Karen wakes up a dozing Joe (in the lounge).  She accepts his NYE invite.
He tells her about some antique sleds and icy hills - she wonders if he's
trying to talk her out of going.  He tells her he's kidding - it'll be magical,
and they both agree they are looking forward to the trip.

The increasingly annoying Rex taunts Scott about going to jail.  Scott tells
him that someday he'll squash him like the bug he is.  Rex leaves Scott
and Jake loathing him.  Eve arrives and asks Scott about the subpoena.
Lee comes up with the witness list - Bennett Devlin, Eve, the cop who
stopped Scott, Lucy, Rhonda - everyone who saw Scott during his drug trip.
