From: rika1@mindspring.com (Rika) Subject: PC: Update, Thursday, January 8 Date: Mon, 12 Jan 1998 02:01:47 GMT X-Server-Date: 12 Jan 1998 02:01:57 GMT PORT CHARLES UPDATE Thursday, Jan. 8, 1998 TODAY'S STORYLINES: ------------------- * The End of the Trial * My Mother the Psycho THE END OF THE TRIAL -------------------- Scott and Lee are at the Firehouse, strategizing. Scott is upset that Lucy's testimony destroyed him. (Okay, your updater has a question. Eve's function is as a go-between, right? So why on EARTH didn't Lucy get in touch with Eve, tell her about the photo, and have Eve talk to Scott? Then at least Scott and Lee could have been prepared. Or, for that matter, why didn't Kevin tell Scott, since he knew Lucy hadn't decided what to do about the photo? Lucy is operating as a free agent these days, and that makes her dangerous. But I digress.) Lee has a witness that will explain how photos can be faked. They also decide to call Kevin to the stand; even though Lee thinks their relationship has soured somewhat, Scott assures Lee that Kevin is honorable and would be a good witness. Scott also argues to be put on the stand himself; Lee flatly refuses. Scott insists that he won't slip up - after all, he's an attorney (well, yeah, Scott, but that hasn't stopped you from slipping up so far). Scott feels he's the only person who can convince the jury of his innocence. Lee would prefer to call Jake, but Scott insists that Jake's testimony is nothing but hearsay. Then Lee suggests calling Serena. Scott emphatically refuses: if he were convicted, Serena might think it were her fault. Outside the courtroom, Rex and Lucy arrive. Lucy hates the way people are staring at her - as though she were a traitor. Rex doesn't think she should be surprised, considering her testimony. Lucy didn't think it would cause the stir that it's caused (your updater is beginning to suspect that Lucy left her brain back at the Lighthouse when she moved out). Lucy sends Rex into the courtroom, explaining that she can't go in since she's a witness (Excuse me? She is finished testifying. What earthly difference could her presence make? Besides, I was a juror in a trial in which witnesses observed the trial both before and after they testified. New York State must have some strange laws about courtroom procedure, or else the writers have some strange ideas about it). Before he goes in, Rex assures Lucy that some day Serena herself will thank Lucy for what she's done. Alone in the doorway, Lucy whispers, "Gee, I sure hope so." Karen and Gail stand together a short distance away from Lucy, both remarking on how wrong they were about Lucy. Kevin arrives in the hallway; he and Lucy exchange a sad, awkward look. Inside the courtroom, a photographic editor explains that there is no way to prove that the photo of Scott in the Caymans is real. Back in the hall, Lucy paces, while Kevin stands alone, staring at the floor. Eve arrives and approaches Kevin. She asks how it's going, and Kevin replies that it's too soon to tell. He pointedly glances in Lucy's direction; Eve takes the hint and heads over to Lucy. Eve gives Lucy a hard time for her testimony. Lucy tries to explain that it's part of the plan; Eve can't see how doing Rex's bidding helps Scott. Lucy tells Eve about Rex's passports, which may show that he was in the Caymans. (Updater's note - my question here is, so what? The fact that Rex was in the Caymans on a given date does NOT establish that he impersonated Scott. In fact, I'd be surprised if Rex opened the account himself; there's too much danger that he would be recognized by the wrong person.) Eve tells Lucy to let her know if there is anything she can do to help. Kevin testifies to Scott's devotion to Serena. He also testifies that Lucy never mentioned the photograph when they were in the Caymans. The prosecutor gets Kevin to admit that it's possible that Lucy got the photo before he arrived in the Caymans. On redirect, Kevin explains that he and Lucy broke up because of her obsession with Serena. (So Kevin and Lucy now have something new in common - perjury....) Scott wants to take the stand next; he threatens to fire Lee and represent himself if Lee won't do it. (This brings to mind the old saying that the attorney who represents himself has a fool for a client.) Lee reluctantly calls Scott to the stand; Karen and other spectators gasp in surprise. Scott denies that he kidnapped Serena or that he gambles. Scott explains that the gambling debt information was forged. He suggests that Rex is trying to get his hands on Serena's money. Scott is about to go off on a rant, but Lee manages to shut him up. Scott explains about Rex's custody suit, and about the terms of Serena's trust fund. On cross-examination, the prosecutor exposes that Scott disobeyed the court order and saw Serena without the social worker present. He then compares Scott's situation with Serena to the situation with Jason's trust fund. Karen comes out in the hall, where Eve and Lucy are standing. Lucy asks Karen how it's going; Karen verbally slaps Lucy around for betraying Scott. Then we hear the closing arguments. You can figure out what the attorneys said if you've been following the case. The prosecutor expounds on the gambling-debt theory, and Lee attempts to expose areas of reasonable doubt. (He makes a good point - nobody *saw* Scott do any of the things he's accused of, not even gambling.) MY MOTHER THE PSYCHO -------------------- At the hospital, Lark approaches Joe and Frank, asking where her mother is. They explain - she's been admitted for 72 hours of psychiatric observation. Lark assures them that her mother just forgot to take her medication; Frank tells her that her mother needs professional help. Lark tells him to stop butting in. The social worker arrives to take Lark to the juvenile center. She asks what will happen if her mother is committed; Frank and Joe assure Lark that they won't forget about her. She spits back, "Gee, I feel all better now." Joe and Frank talk about their father - Lark's mother's behavior reminded Joe of the way their father got when he drank. Frank angrily defends his father's reputation and behavior: "Dad was a saint compared to what I've seen." Later, Frank visits Lark at the juvenile center. Her mother is being committed. Frank assures Lark that he wants to help her. She doesn't want his help - he knows nothing about her life. She suggests, "Why don't you take the warm, fuzzy feeling you get from helping those less fortunate and shove it?" (You have to hand it to the kid - she has a way with words.) --------------- by Rika, Thursday updater
