PC Update, Wednesday 14 January 1998

Rex interrupts Lucy at *his* bedroom door. She says she's looking for
her bracelet. He finds this odd as she's never been in his room. She's
tense, he says, and she would relax if she told him what she was really
up to. She was planning a surprise for him; she was going to get under
the covers and surprise him. But now the surprise is ruined. But he
wants her to get under the covers anyway — so he can favour each moment
of her disrobing.

Rex is happy to know she shares his attraction for her. He unsnaps her
jacket and takes it off her. She says really she's shy, but he counters
that her dress doesn't send out that message. He wants to see her slip
out of it. He suggests she slip into something in the bathroom and
he'll change out here in the bedroom. Rex suggests a bath first. Lucy,
now alone in the bathroom, says she would rather bathe with an
alligator.

Frank sees Julie doing yoga and makes some comments about cracking
bones. She tells him the story of Lark and the sweaters (Julie was
willing to buy a $35 sweater, Lark wanted a $140 sweater; Julie said no;
Lark stole the $140 sweater; Julie made her give both of them back).
Frank says this is a classic cry for attention, but Julie did the right
thing. Julie says Eve was right — Lark is going to be a handful.

Matt and Ellen are in the hospital corridor. Ellen hasn't been to see
her mother yet after the operation. They had a fight just before
surgery, and Ellen hadn't cared if she had lived or died. During
surgery, though, she had remembered a time when she fell using her new
skates. Her mom had brought her to emergency and had given her a charm
of a deer. She had felt safe, that her mom would take care of her. She
still has the deer. She wishes she still had her mother.

Rex is reading the paper on half-lying on top of his bed. He tells Lucy
he is on fire with anticipation. Lucy wants champagne. She begs "Rexy"
to get it. He leaves to get it for his little "lambchop". She goes
back into the bedroom and looks out the window for a way out. She is
tapped on the shoulder.

She was startled by Rex. He wants to know what kind of champagne she
wants. She's looked for a big towel but couldn't find one big enough.
He offers her face towels, but she wants a big towel. Couldn't he go
find one for her? He goes to get one, but wants to be the one to unwrap
her. He brings her a robe, which is better than a towel, and kisses
her.

Frank finds Lark and says he wants to welcome her into their home. Lark
is her sullen self. He wants her to be a productive and honest member
of the household. She tries to tell Frank about Julie and the clothes
in a light favourable to her, and also tells Frank that her mom cut all
of her clothes up previously during a bad episode. Frank tells Lark he
agrees with Julie's call on the clothes. She replies that tough love is
very eighties. He says attitude goes a long way.

Ellen goes in to see her mother. Her mother for a moment thinks she is
"sweet pea", a younger version of Ellen. Ellen says it is a side effect
of the anaesthetic. Alice describes floating above her body, but she
wasn't scared. She wants to know if Ellen came as her daughter or her
doctor, after Ellen replied in a clinical fashion that others have
experienced similar out-of-body experiences. Alice also had a dream
about when Ellen was 8. Same skating/deer charm memory as Ellen. Ellen
tells Alice she remembers also.

Rex turns down the covers. Lucy's in the robe. Lucy says she's
chilly. Rex wants to warm her. She wants to know where the champagne
is. It's still cooling he says; and kisses her. She's thirsty, wants a
drink first. He leaves. She grabs purse, runs to window and sets off
alarm.

She runs and puts back her purse, and pretends she set it off just
looking. Lucy is stressed; this is not the way she wanted this. Lucy
notices the covering over the safe is ajar. She turns on the charm and
pushes Rex back into the wall, kissing him, so that she can get over to
close it without him discovering she had opened it previously.

Ellen shows mom she still has the deer charm. She gives it to Alice to
keep. Alice thinks Sam must have kept his bargain and put her through
med school. Ellen says no. So then her mom assumes she was right about
him — he left her. Ellen tells her mother that Sam died before
finishing law school. Alice wants to know why Ellen hadn't told her.
Ellen says she tried. A nurse comes in. Ellen leaves saying she has
work to do. In the corridor, she leans against the door. She is upset.

Frank tells Julie about Lark's mom cutting up her clothes. Frank urges
consistency is what Lark needs. The door bell rings and Frank leaves to
answer it. Lark enters the downstairs area of the house, checks that no
one is in either of the rooms off the sides, and lights up a cigarette.
She wants to see what this does for her attitude.

Lucy and Rex break off kissing. It's too intense, she says, she has to
go. She goes to change in the bathroom (the robe was over her dress, it
turns out). Rex calls security to get the surveillance tapes, but
they're blank due to a power surge. He threatens his security guy not
to let this happen again. Lucy exits, telling him the wait will be
worth it.
