Today I learned that it's hard to type when you're crying. And
crying. And crying.

TODAY'S STORYLINES:

AND THE MATT CAME BACK
----------------------
Matt and Ellen, in a continuation of yesterday's episode, are at
Ellen's apartment. Matt is surprised that Ellen doesn't seem happy to
see him. She is worried about his safety. Matt explains that he has
left the Witness Protection Program. He gave his testimony, and now
he wants to take charge of his life. He tried to prepare for another
fresh start, but he found that he couldn't do it - he couldn't imagine
his life without Ellen.

Ellen objects - they don't have that kind of relationship. Matt
wonders, in that case, why she ran into his arms when she saw him.
She was just glad to see him alive, she explains. He insists that
they could have something good together; doesn't she remember how she
felt when she thought she'd never see him again? You can't build a
relationship on one kiss, she replies. Matt remarks, "It's a start;"
Ellen retorts, "No, it was supposed to be an ending." She apologizes
if she led him on. Matt isn't happy to hear that.

Matt changes tacks - he doesn't want to give up his career after
working so hard. He intends to check into a hotel, since he can't go
back to his apartment. Ellen offers to let him stay with her. He
doesn't like the idea - it would endanger her - but she points out
that if he uses a credit card at a hotel, he could be located. He
admits that she's right and accepts her offer. He wants to get his
address book from his apartment, since he might be traced through his
friends. She convinces him to let her go alone to get it; she goes to
the Recovery Room frequently so it wouldn't seem suspicious for her to
show up there. When she gets the keys from Matt, he takes her hand in
both of his and tells her to be careful. She assures him that she's
always careful; he touches her face and remarks, "Yeah, I've noticed."

Grace arrives at the Recovery Room looking for Matt. She talks to
Mike and finds out that Mike didn't know Matt was leaving town (she
tells Mike about Ellen's minimal explanation of Matt's disappearance).
Mike's response makes it clear that he has a good idea what's going
on, though Grace doesn't notice that. The whole thing doesn't make
sense to her and she's worried.

Ellen arrives, and Grace asks her about Matt again. She can't believe
that Matt would leave without telling his landlord. Mike tries to
help Ellen make excuses for Matt, but Grace isn't reassured. Ellen
orders a dinner to go, and Mike goes off to get it. Grace can't
believe that Ellen is so unconcerned about Matt; Ellen tells her that
Matt must not want them to know his business, and there's no reason to
get hysterical about it. Grace doesn't think being concerned means
she's hysterical, and her conscience won't let her just assume that
Matt is okay. She leaves angrily. Then Ellen, looking to see if
anyone is watching, slips quietly into Matt's apartment.

Later, Ellen exits Matt's apartment and is about to leave, until Mike
reminds her of the dinner she ordered. He asks if she found what she
was looking for in Matt's room; she claims to have left her electronic
organizer there. He asks how she got in; she claims the door was
unlocked. Mike is duly unimpressed by her explanations. He repeats
the offer he made to Matt to help if help is needed, because he can
tell it's a dangerous situation.

"TA"
----
Lucy wakes up to find that Kevin has fallen asleep while sitting
beside her, his head resting on the edge of the bed. She strokes his
hair and he wakes up. She's concerned because he looks tired and
uncomfortable, after hours of sitting on the same hard stool. He
spins around on the stool and teases that he ordered a dozen of them
for the Lighthouse.

Scott, Karen, Jake, and Joe enter the room with - the antidote! But
there's a catch. It's an unusual combination of chemicals and they
aren't sure of the dosage. If they guessed wrong, the antidote could
be lethal, but there isn't time to test it completely. Without it she
is certain to die. Lucy asks what the chances are - 50/50? "Not that
good," Jake reluctantly replies. Lucy asks Kevin his opinion. At
first he tells her that it has to be her choice, but when she presses
him for advice he tells her that a small chance is better than no
chance. Lucy agrees and asks for the antidote, but first she wants to
have some time with Scott and Kevin. The interns leave the room.

Scott sits beside her while Kevin walks over by the door. Scott
apologizes for getting her into this mess. She admits that he's
gotten her into a lot of messes, but this isn't one of them. He
insists that he should have protected her. She assures him that she
did what she did to protect Serena, and it was worth it no matter what
happens. Scott admits that he was a fool for keeping Serena away from
Lucy for so many years; she assures him that it's ancient history.
She wants him to remember that she loves him, and to tell Serena that
she loves her too. Scott promises to bring Serena to see her when
she's better. "You know how I feel about you," Scott says, and Lucy
nods. Then he leaves her alone with Kevin.

Kevin sits beside her, and Lucy remarks that this may be 'goodbye' for
them. Kevin refuses to accept that. Lucy tells Kevin how much she
loves him; he has made her happier than she thought possible. He
tries to stop her from saying what sounds like "goodbye," but she asks
him to let her say some things she needs to say. In her past
relationships, even with the men she married, the men really didn't
really know her or even like her - she probably embarrassed them. But
Kevin loves her and accepts her for who she is. Kevin interrupts to
assure her that loving her is the "easiest, most right thing" he's
ever done. Lucy continues. Kevin has been completely loyal, and he
is kind and good; a few years ago, he probably would have been *too*
good for her, but now she knows that "good and kind" is what she
wants.

Kevin tells Lucy that she is everything he searched for his entire
life, and that he will always love her, no matter what. She will
always love him too, she replies. She makes him promise that if the
worst happens, he won't go to "that dark place," but instead that he
will let people help him to get through it. They kiss, holding each
other tightly, and then Lucy tells Kevin that she's ready to proceed.
They embrace and kiss again - obviously saying goodbye whether they
admit it or not - and then Kevin goes to get the others. He pauses at
the door to look back, and Lucy whispers, "Ta."

Later, Kevin sits on Lucy's bed holding her hand while Scott, Jake,
and Joe, and Karen stand around the bed. Lucy thanks them for their
efforts and asks them, if the worst happens, not to blame themselves.
She knows how hard they tried, and she appreciates what they've done.
As Karen injects the antidote into Lucy's IV line, Kevin mouths the
words, "I love you," and he and Lucy look into each other's eyes as
they wait.

A while later, Kevin is still sitting on Lucy's bed, holding her hand,
but she is now unconscious. Scott paces the room nervously. A
machine beeps, and Kevin jumps up, saying, "Oh, no!" Karen races in.
Kevin tells her Lucy's breathing is too shallow, and Karen listens to
Lucy's chest and reports that Lucy is in respiratory arrest. Karen
yells for a crash cart, while Kevin grabs a ventilator bag. When he
makes a remark about entubating Lucy, Karen reminds him of the DNR
order. Kevin retorts that he can't sit by and watch Lucy die, no
matter what papers Lucy signed. Karen insists that Lucy didn't want
extreme measures (then why did you order the crash cart, Karen?) The
crash cart arrives, and Kevin begins to entubate Lucy himself. Karen
tries to stop him, but Kevin tells her either to help or to get out of
the way. Scott grabs Karen and begs her to help Kevin; evidently she
does what her daddy says, because she immediately agrees to help
Kevin, and he gets the breathing tube inserted.

Kevin, Scott, and Karen watch Lucy, now attached to the ventilator.
Scott remarks that she looks like she's sleeping; Kevin replies that
she is completely nonresponsive. Scott still holds out hope that Lucy
will get better. Kevin thanks Karen for her help; he hasn't entubated
anyone since med school. Kevin is doubting his decision now. Scott
asks what other option Kevin had, and Kevin answers, "I gave her my
word." He explains that he promised Lucy that he would abide by the
DNR order: "The one thing she asked me not to do, I've done." Scott
insists that Kevin did it because he loves Lucy; Kevin answers, "In a
selfish way." Scott assures Kevin that he would have done the same
thing.

Karen feels guilty - perhaps the antidote caused the respiratory
failure. Kevin insists that she shouldn't feel that way. Joe arrives
with some bad news - the lab rats who originally responded well to the
antidote are now dying, one by one, of respiratory failure. Kevin
seems to lose hope at first when he hears this, but then he recovers,
insisting that there are enough differences between rat and human
physiology (well, yeah, with some exceptions here and there) that
there is still hope.

Boardman arrives (and why he's involved at all isn't clear; he's a
surgeon and she's a medical case). He opens with his characteristic
tact: "I heard she crashed." Kevin gets up from Lucy's bed and walks
over to face Boardman; he insists that Lucy is alive and will recover.
Boardman reminds him of the legal and ethical implications of ignoring
the DNR. "I saved her life," insists Kevin. Boardman reminds him
that he did so against Lucy's wishes; Kevin replies that Lucy was
"barely coherent" when she signed the DNR. Boardman insists that Lucy
has to be disconnected from the machines at once. Kevin glares at
Boardman and warns him, "You even breathe on one of those machines and
I will rip you apart."
