Port Charles
Update for Tuesday, June 30, 1998

(Disclaimer: I am finding this update *very* difficult to write, and I
am --> <-- that close to not watching Port Charles anymore because I am
*so* angry that I'm just not even enjoying it anymore. Don't get me
wrong... I think *everyone* in this Serena storyline is doing a stellar
job... and Lynn Herring, Julie Pinson and Kin Shriner are all wonderful in
their roles... but I get tense anyway when stories revolve around children
in peril and this whole Lucy/Eve thing is just pissing me off *so* much that
I don't know if I can watch anymore. I'm just not looking forward to PC
anymore like I used to. *deep breath* I'll give it a little while to sort
itself out, but if Lucy continues this way and doesn't confess to someone
who's *conscious,* that's gonna be it for me. (rant off))

Scott, Karen, Kevin and Lucy are in a waiting area in the hospital. Scott
and Karen are talking about Serena and how much she's grown. Scott keeps a
height chart and a foot chart, and whenever Serena goes over to the
telescope to look up at her mother's star, she measures her feet. Karen is
amazed that she's already a kid's size 12 1/2, and Scott corrects her...
Serena's a 13 1/2! He tells Karen that he bought Serena new ballet slippers
in Canada, and a stuffed animal that he put by the door for her. Karen
assures him that she's going to love them. She says that she used love new
shoes when she was little, too, and Scott apologizes for not buying her
shoes when she was a kid. Karen says he can buy her some new shoes, now.

Gail and Lee come in and Gail offers to go get some coffee. Lee says he
knows it's a futile suggestion, but maybe Scott should go take a stretch and
get some air. Kevin makes the same suggestion to Lucy, but she says she
doesn't want to go anywhere.

Dr. May comes in and Scott asks if Serena is okay. Dr. May tells him that
Serena is in a coma, and she can't really give him a time frame of when
she'll wake up. She says they'll give Serena an MRI once she stabilizes and
then they'll see what the situation is going to be. Lucy is frustrated that
Dr. May is being so vague, and says Dr. May must know more, but Dr. May says
it's too early to tell if there'll be any permanent damage to her brain.
Scott says maybe she just needs to rest and then she'll just wake up and say
"Hi." Dr. May tells Scott that he can see Serena once she's settled in her
room. Eve comes up to Scott and asks what Dr. May said and if the surgery
was successful. Scott just walks away.

Matt tells Ellen that he has some news... he's betting that Chris is the one
that took the pictures of them. He says he's stopped by a couple of photo
shops already, but hasn't had any luck. But he figures that if Chris *did*
take the pictures, he'd want to get them developed as soon as possible--and
there's a photo shop right around the corner from Ellen's mother's
apartment. Matt says he's going to check that out, and, in the meantime,
says Ellen should think about how she wants to make Chris pay. "I think
it's going to be a lot less painful than what I have in mind."

Lucy is telling Doc that Serena should never have been with Eve and that it
was totally irresponsible for Eve not to check her gas gauge. Lucy insists
that *she* would have checked her gauge. Kevin reminds her that everyone
runs out of gas. Lucy seizes on that and says that Kevin's right, the gas
wasn't the problem, it was Eve's carelessness. Kevin tells Lucy that
assigning blame won't help anything, but Lucy insists the blame is a
no-brainer here, Eve acted totally irresponsibly. Kevin says that leaving a
child alone in a car while you're only 20 feet away is an error in judgment,
maybe, but Eve had no idea the car would roll down the embankment. He says
Eve's already beating herself up over it and they don't need to join in.
Lucy disagrees: Eve can't beat herself up enough. Lucy says she keeps
running her life with Serena over and over in her head. When she finally
came back from being kidnapped, Lucy thought the whole word was right again
and everything would be okay. Kevin reassures her that she'll have plenty
of time to spend with Serena.

Scott goes in to see Serena. She's got bandages over her eyes and lots of
tubes and stuff hooking her up to machines. He tells her that he picked up
presents for her in Canada and that he's got her ring. He wore it the whole
time he was away and felt like she was with him. He says he's giving it
back to her now because she said it had super powers and she needs that now.
He tells her about his trip, and how he saw her old fish Willie and Arnold.
He also tells her that Mommy's star is shining bright and she should take
this time to get better.

Lucy has been waiting outside Serena's room. When Scott comes out, they hug
and she
tells him that they brought Serena into this world and they have the
strength to keep her there. Scott admits that if he knew having a kid was
going to be so hard, he wouldn't have done it. But Lucy says she knows he
wouldn't trade one single minute of his time with Serena. Scott says he
thought that the pain of Dominique dying was the worst, but that this is
even worse. Scott pounds on the nurse's station and says that he shouldn't
have left Serena alone
with Eve. Lucy says he can't blame himself, that he didn't know he couldn't
trust Eve (?!?!), and that she didn't know Eve would be so thoughtless and
leave Serena alone. [I thought Lynn Herring did a great job in this scene,
but there was such an undercurrent of it all being a farce that I couldn't
feel even the least bit sorry for her. Even as the tears are streaming down
her face, she's *still* trying to put the blame on Eve and I thought it
really cheapened any of her very real feelings for Serena.] Scott starts
berating himself for leaving Serena alone in her room for even four minutes,
when he just said he'd never leave her again. Lucy tries to get him to
remember the day they named Serena, by Dominique's grave at the cemetery.
She says when Scott took Serena away, she promised to herself that if she
ever got something that precious in her life again, she'd never lose it.
She also says she lost one of their children before, and she she's not going
to lose another. They hug again and go in to see Serena.

Eve is walking by Serena's room, but sees Scott and Lucy inside and keeps
going. She sees Kevin sitting outside and looks like she's ready for him to
start berating her, but he takes her in his arms and hugs her and she just
cries and says "Thank you" over
and over. (This came the closest to making me cry at a soap opera scene
since Felicia collapsed crying in the hospital when she realized that it was
BJ who was the donor of the heart for Maxie). Eve says she talked to Joe
and that she may have killed Serena, and Kevin tries to convince her that
she didn't do anything wrong. "We just have to live with accidents of fate.
We're only human." But Eve doesn't buy it and says she'll never forgive
herself.

Scott is on the roof of the hospital. He is talking to Dominique, telling
her that he can see their gazebo. He doesn't understand why this is
happening
and tells Dominique that she has to find out who's "responsible" and get
them to change their minds and make Serena better. He talks about her "big
plans" and how sometimes she wants to be a singer, and other days she wants
to be a doctor like her sister. He says she's only 7 and doesn't deserve
the short straw. She just wants to make people happy. He says she got that
from Dominique, not from him, and that Dom lives on in Serena's heart. "You
got to tell God that that little angel belongs right down here with us, with
all of us. I know you're one of his favorite angels--put a word in for our
little girl."

Matt tells Ellen that his instincts were right: he went to the photo shop
around the corner from Alice's and the sales guy recognized Chris--even said
he'd sign an affidavit. Elle says these are serious charges and could turn
into a mudslinging contest. Matt points out that Chris didn't let that
bother him when he took the pictures. Ellen asks what they're going to do
with the information.

Chris and Eve are talking in the on-call room (I think that's where they
were). He shares one of his "rules"
with her: "If you did the deed, jump on the steed." Eve asks if that's
supposed to mean she should run away. She says a child might die because of
her and that she can't run away from that. Chris says that She didn't mean
to hurt Serena and that "God likes sick jokes." He tells her that
everybody's playing the same game and sometimes you win big and sometimes
you lose big. Eve asks if that is really all there is.

Ellen tells Scott that the doctors are concerned that Serena hasn't woken up
yet. Scott says maybe she just needs her rest. Ellen says that the
swelling in her brain hasn't gone down as much as they'd like and the MRI
reveals some complications. She tells Scott that Serena's corneas were
severely damaged and that if Serena regains consciousness, there's a good
chances she'll be blind. Scott is devastated.
