Happy Canada Day! (July 1st)

THE SERENA VIGIL

Lucy sists vigil at Serena's bedside. She tells Serena how much she
loves her, and confesses to the comatose child that she put the set of
coincidences that caused the accident in action, by siphoning the gas
from Eve's car. She tells Serena that she has to blame Eve, otherwise
she'll go out of her mind. Just as she finishes her confession, the door
to the room slams. It's Scott, but he has not heard what Lucy has said to
Serena.

Scott and Lucy go outside the hotel room. Scott tells Lucy that Dr. May
has said that the longer she stays in the coma, the more chance for a
poor outcome. He also tells her that Serena will perhaps be blind, due
to the problem with her corneas. Lucy is devestated by the news. Scott
goes so far as to say it might be better if she dies, rather than to
have an uncertain future. Lucy denies this, and says that she feels
that Serena is *not* pulling away from them.

[Now, in great soap fashion, this is Lucy at her best. Using her faith
and forcefulness of character to encourage both her and Scott to hold on
to the thought that Serena will get better. Exactly what Scott needed.
The writers are certainly doing their best to show us the many sides of
Lucy Coe these past few days. This is darn good stuff!]

Later, in the hospital corridors, Lucy runs into Eve and again tells Eve
that she is to blame for what has happened to Serena. Eve is reeling
from the events of the last couple of days. She asks Lucy if she can
find it in her miserable little heart for a little compassion. Lucy
can't -- she is going to remind Eve every day for the rest of her life
what she's done to Eve.

[This *is* the stuff great soaps are made of! Eve willing to take the
blame and feel the guilt, and being truly devastated by what's happened
and by the others' reactions to her. And Lucy, hiding her guilt and
taking it out on Eve. When this comes out, and I hope that it does
sooner rather than later as I hate Lucy being able to avoid Scott's and
the others' wrath, I hope that Lucy learns *another* important life
lesson that she is so in need of.]

Karen is upset about Serena. She apologizes to Eve for seeming to take
it out on her. Joe comforts Karen. Neil and his mom come up to them,
and Neil asks Karen and Joe to take him to visit Serena. They try to put
him off, but he is persistent. Karen agrees to take him to see her.
While he is there, Neil gives Serena his weird model spaceship-thingy
that Joe made him. He says it was good luck for him, so it will be for
Serena, and he leaves it under her hand.

Frank wants his stuff back from Julie. She's already boxed it up for
him -- including his box of condoms. Courtney overhears their fight.
She dislikes Frank, so she proceeds to make fun of him, taunting him
that Julie broke up with him. Later, Frank asks Courtney to lunch. He
is persistent, but Courtney continues to decline. Joe is a little
amazed that they are talking like this, as it is well-known that they do
not get along.

Eve sneaks into Serena's room to see her when everyone is gone. Scott
returns and reminds Eve that he told her to stay away from Serena. Eve
is upset, she loves Serena, but leaves as requested.

Later, Serena regains consciousness as Scott and Karen sit vigil. She
wants to know what's happened, and why she can't see. Scott tells her
about the accident. She asks to hold Scott's hand so that it won't be
so dark and she won't be so scared.

Eve comes in, and sees that Serena is awake. She is so happy, and goes
to hug Scott. Scott avoids her, pulls her outside the room, and tells
her that it's over between them. He never wants to see her again.

End of Vigil. Beginning of storyline that is going to focus on Serena's
blindness.
