My favourite character was on today (Eve) as was my least fav (Julie),
so I guess it all balanced out in the end.

Courtney is excited, because Neil is allowed to get out of the hospital
on a day pass. He is going to go see Serena, and is making her a box
out of popsicle sticks. Courtney spies Karen's *real* engagement ring
-- Joe's grandmother's ring. Courtney is a little dismayed, but
pretends to Karen about how excited she is. Courtney thinks Joe's
grandmother had a reputation as being hard, but Karen remembers her as
always having treats for the neighbourhood kids. Neil, who is out of
his wheelchair and has good white blood cell counts, is told that Karen
and Joe are engaged, and he is genuinely happy for them. Later,
Courtney offers to help Karen plan her wedding (apparently, this is her
forte and business). Karen is hesitant, but agrees to discuss it with
Joe.

Karen and Lark are working behind the desk, and Karen asks Lark about
her mother. Karen says that she empathizes, as her mother was often
absent in her own life due to alcoholism. Lark says she has only seen
her mom once since she was in the hospital. Lark phones the hospital
and is told that her mom may be able to tell truth from fantasy in a few
days, as she is now taking her meds.

Eve is at the firehouse to visit Serena, who is napping. Scott and Eve
discuss how things are going. Scott becomes angry -- life goes on for
everyone else, but for Serena, life means she is stuck in the dark. Eve
thinks it's best that she leave, but Serena wakes, and, hearing Eve's
voice, calls for her. Eve has brought Serena the musical game Simon, in
which the object is to match the tunes that get progressively more
complicated. Serena doesn't want to try the game, and demands that Eve
carry her to her room. Watching Serena and Eve, Scott realizes that the
social workers and doctors have been right -- Serena needs to do more
for herself. When Eve returns, he tells her that he is going to work at
getting his courageous, carefree daughter back. Eve asks if he is sure
tough love is the way to go, but Scott's mind is made up.

Frank visits Julie, who is wearing her best prison grey, and tells her
that the voice activator was bought by Lark's mother, who has been out
of the institution for a couple of months. Frank also tells her that
her nemesis, Greg Cooper, is a guest at the same institution. Frank
leaves to play detective some more; later, Karen comes to visit Julie,
and asks her to be her maid of honour. Julie agrees after cracking some
prison jokes.

Frank is at the mental institution. The doctor tells him that Greg
Cooper has been there a number of months -- and that his only visitor
has been Lark.

Da plot thickens, as they say...
