Updater’s note: Boy did I pick a good day for my first update!

The show opens with Joe Scanlon on the phone with Eve Lambert (who is at GH).

Joe: Eve – it’s Joe.

Eve: Oh hey Joe, what’s up?

Joe: Oh I’m just over at Karen’s but I wanted to call and check on Neil.

Eve: I just left his room and he’s knee-deep in the ‘Swiss Family Robinson’.

Joe: That’s my boy. If anything comes up can you just page me?

Eve: I know that you’re worried about Neil, but why don’t you just hang out with Karen tonight and try to have some fun? You two deserve it.

Joe: You read my mind. Bye.

Eve: Bye.

Joe hangs up and Karen enters the room.

Karen: What?

Joe: Do you still have that hot pink dress I always loved?

Karen: You mean the one I have to paint on?

Joe: Um hmm. That’s the one.

Karen: Yeah I might have to rescue that from the “dresses I’ve had no reason to wear lately” pile.

Joe: Put it on ‘cause you and I have plans tonight.

Karen: We do?

Joe: Yes – I’m going to my house to change, when I get back – be ready for a night out on the town.

Karen: Yes sir! What exactly are we celebrating?

Joe: Our first date in a very long time.

Karen: Hmm.

Joe: Tonight we’re going to forget about all our problems.

Change to the conference room where the Judge, Det. Garcia, Kevin, Rachel Locke, Julie, Chris, Darren Leopold have gathered to hear the ruling.

Judge: Let me begin by saying that my judgement here today in no way speaks towards Julie Devlin’s innocence or guilt in regard to the criminal charges against her. My job is to determine whether Miss Devlin is of sound mind to enter into marriage. Despite the compelling arguments against this union, given by Det. Garcia and Dr. Collins, I find no evidence that Miss Devlin is incapable of understanding her actions, or that she has been coerced or manipulated in any way. Therefore, I’m granting Julie Devlin and Christopher Ramsey permission to be married.

Hugs and handshakes all around – while Kevin looks on.

Opening Credits

Darren: (to Chris): Congratulations.

Garcia: According to city records Julie & Chris don’t have a marriage license yet.

Kevin: Any legal way to stop them from getting one?

Garcia: Go to the State Supreme Court – request an Article 78 hearing that prohibits the town clerk from issuing them one.

Kevin: On what grounds?

Garcia: That Julie lacks the mental capacity to be married.

Kevin: This time they caught us unawares. Next time we present evidence that counters the competency tests that Rachel performed with Julie, and Judge Enders ruling today.

Garcia: Mac’s gonna pull a few strings – see that you’re Julie’s court appointed psychiatrist.

Kevin: Pays to be best friend with the Police Commissioner. (noticing Julie looking his way) I think our Bride-to-be wants a word. Excuse me.

Julie: You hate losing, don’t you?

Kevin: This isn’t a game Julie – I just want what’s best for you.

Julie: Marrying Chris is what’s best for me – I wish you could believe that.

Kevin: I do, too.

Julie: And what makes you think you know if I’m capable of love?

Kevin: That’s not what this is about.

Julie: That’s exactly what this is about. Excuse me. (Julie walks away)

Chris (to Garcia): You really don’t know when to quit.

Garcia: Oh I’ll quit when I believe that Julie isn’t being conned into marriage by a gold-digging manipulator.

Chris: What’s going on Garcia? Are you jealous?

Garcia: Of you? Hardly.

Chris: Then why don’t you butt out and let Julie have a life?

Garcia: Oh she can have a life, she can have a great life, as long as it’s not one that includes her being outside of Ferncliff and married to you.

Chris: I’m afraid that you’re about to go 0 for 2 in the wish department.

Rachel (to Kevin): I know that look on your face – that “I can’t believe the Judge made such a lousy decision” look. Believe me – I’ve been there many times.

Kevin: You were very impressive in the hearing.

Rachel: I hope you weren’t offended by my defense tactics.

Kevin: Not at all, you were only doing your job.

Rachel: You didn’t approve.

Kevin: You’re determined to find Julie competent. I feel the exact opposite. Seems to be a recurring theme with us.

Rachel: Now I’m very interested to know why is it you insist on minimizing the extent of Julie’s recovery? After all what I know about your background you yourself made an astonishing recovery from a deeply traumatic situation.

Kevin: I didn’t know I was one of your case studies.

Rachel: I make it a point to know everything I can about my colleagues. I also know that you were an excellent doctor – before AND after your unfortunate episode.

Julie (to Chris): What you said about me to the Judge – If I didn’t know how much money was in this for you, I’d almost think you cared.

Chris: I do care. We brought Christina into this world together, didn’t we?

Julie: You saved her life.

Chris: Now I’m trying to save yours. You can count on me.

Julie: I’m not used to having a man I can depend on.

Chris: Yeah, well get used to it. ‘Cause I’m not gonna bail on you. All we have to do is get you out of Ferncliff and then you, Christina, and I can be together. You have my word. (This must have had quite an effect on Julie – since she drops the papers she was holding all over the floor. Chris helps her pick them up)

Kevin (to Garcia): Ask Mac to give me a call when he gets back, will you? See if he can give me some details on that Article 78 idea?

Garcia: Will do.

Kevin: Thanks.

Rachel smiles at Kevin as Kevin leaves.

Joe arrives at Karen’s apartment where she is now wearing the “painted-on” pink dress.

Karen: Hi

Joe: Wow Yeah that’s the dress alright.

Karen: Are you sure – because I can always go put on a pair of overalls….

Joe: Oh no no - don’t you dare. You look gorgeous.

Karen: Thank you. (he presents her with a flower)

Karen: Thanks.

Joe & Karen both try to speak at the same time – and laugh.

Karen: OK – you first.

Joe: No I was worried that I was late – I stopped by the hospital for a quick visit with Neil.

Karen: How is he?

Joe: He’s putting the final touches on a ’58 Ford Fairlane model. The kid never stops – it’s amazing. You know even after all the tests and the chemo he refuses to give up. He’s got more guts than anyone I know.

Karen: Well I could think of one other person. (this brings a smile to Joe’s face) You’re smiling!

Joe: Well I have a lot to smile about – Neil, you, tonight…

Karen: So, where to Dr. Scanlon?

Joe: You get one hint – think back to our first date.

Karen: Gee, that seemed like centuries ago. A lot has happened since then – a lot has changed, too.

Joe: Not everything’s changed.

Karen: No, I still get butterflies in my stomach when I’m with you.

Joe: Well I get some butterflies myself. C’mon Lark’ll kill me if we’re late.

Karen: Lark? What are you up to?

Joe: Just come on – you’ll see.

They leave.

The lighthouse.

Eve walks in on Kevin who is sitting dejectedly on the couch.

Eve: Hey – you’re home. Uh oh…. I guess the hearing didn’t go very well.

Kevin: The Judge ruled in Julie’s favor. She and Chris can marry.

Eve: How can that Judge find Julie competent?

Kevin: Two words – Rachel Locke! You should have seen her – smooth, convincing, oozing sincerity from her pores! I’m convinced that woman doesn’t have a sincere bone in her body.

Eve: Well, I’m sure Miss Sweet Talkin’ Julie Devlin did her best to pursuade the Judge, too.

Kevin: To say nothing of your friend, Chris. What a performance!

Eve: You’re taking this kinda hard…

Kevin: Yeah well it’s not just this it’s everything. Italy…. Victor….

Eve: You know what? I am pretty burnt out myself. (Eve puts her arm around Kevin while a devilish look comes over his face) What is that strange look you have on your face?

Kevin: Yes I know, that’s my “Boy have I got a brilliant idea” look.

Eve: Is that what that is?

Kevin: Um hmm – trust me , you’re gonna love it.

Joe & Karen at Mario’s – where Lark is their waitress.

Lark: Mr. Romance here called ahead and had the Chef prepare the exact you guys had for your first date. Now why can’t I find a guy like that?

Karen: You planned all this?

Joe: I wanted something special. To surprises – and you.

Karen: Cheers. So did you hear? Julie’s hearing was today to decide whether she’s competent to marry Chris.

Joe: What a joke!

Karen: Why do you say that?

Joe: Well I know Julie’s a friend of ours but she should be locked up for life.

Karen: Even if she’s innocent?

Joe: You think she is?

Karen: Shouldn’t she get the benefit of the doubt? People deserve second chances Joe, I know you believe that.

Joe: Well reasonable people yeah, but Julie should pay for her crimes.

Karen: IF she did them.

Joe: Besides her and Ramsey’s marriage has to be a scam.

Karen: I don’t know – they sure went to a lot of trouble to be together. Maybe they’re really in love.

Joe: What do you say we agree to disagree?

Karen: Sure.

Joe: Good – because tonight is our night isn’t it?

Karen: Yeah

The visitor’s room in Ferncliff – Chris & Julie are signing papers.

Chris: All done.

Darren: Not quite – the prenuptial agreement. Now we can make this all legal as well. (reading) “In the event of divorce, Dr. Christopher Ramsey will continue to receive half of the patent proceeds from the drug referred to herein as DL-56. (Chris takes Julie’s hand) This stipulation shall apply without conditions including but not limited to length of marriage.”

Chris (to Julie): Forget it kid.

Outdoors somewhere with Eve & Kevin in front of a tent with a campfire burning nearby.

Eve: You’re a genius.

Kevin: Yeah –you inspire me. Boy I have to say that there’s nothing sexier than seeing you in my sweater.

Eve: You know what’s amazing? It’s amazing how – ooh (Kevin is kissing her neck) oh yeah, right there. How no matter where you are – everybody sees the same stars. You know? Like Victor and Mary are seeing the same stars that we’re seeing right now. And Chris is seeing the same stars - even Julie can see these stars from her room at Ferncliff….

Kevin: Hold it hold it whoa, whoa, whoa – there’s a few things that we’re not going to talk about out here – Victor, Italy and especially not Julie Devlin.

Eve: Okay – alright – but it’s gonna be hard not to think about something when you’re told not to. Ooh – that was creepy…

Kevin: Now what?

Eve: I just had this major sense of déjà vu – like I said what I just said in Italy. Oops – sorry I didn’t mean to say Italy. I’m sorry, I’m sorry.

Kevin: Eve – we came out here to try and get away. So let’s just get away – okay?

Eve: Okay – you’re right. Have you got any distractions?

Kevin: As a matter of fact, I have.

They start to kiss again – when Eve feels something under Kevin’s sweater.

Eve: Hey what’s this?

Kevin: That’s just - new pages from my book. Would you like a little bedtime story?

Eve: Well, I’m not quite ready to go to sleep yet….

Fade on Eve & Kevin kissing in front of the fire.

Julie on the phone from Ferncliff.

Julie: Dr. Ramsey, please.

Julie fantasizes while she’s waiting on hold…..

Rachel: Congratulations – you’re a free woman. Oh I bet you can’t wait to get your whole life back again, huh?

Julie: You have no idea. (they embrace) Thank you.

Chris: Here she is Christina – here’s your Mommy.

Julie: Oh Christina – oh I told you I’d come for you. Yes – you never gave up baby. (to Chris) I guess this is where we part ways…

Chris: No this is where we begin…. (he kisses her & her fantasy ends when Chris gets on the phone)

Chris: This is Dr. Ramsey.

Julie: Hi – it’s me.

Chris: Are you OK?

Julie: I wanted to tell you something I should have said before. What I said about you at the hearing today – I meant it, every word.

Chris: Well, like I said – I care about you Julie. After all – we’re going to be husband and wife, right?

Julie: That’s right – Mr. And Mrs. Town Pariah.

Chris: Yeah – it has a nice ring to it.

Julie: Well, that’s all I called for. Guess I’ll see you later.

Chris: Julie – um, it was a great day.

Julie: One of the best. (she hangs up & the fantasy continues – but this time it’s Chris’ fantasy).

Julie (to Chris): Thank you for taking care of my little girl. Yes c’mon – you are Mommy’s little girl. (she turns and kisses Chris)

Chris: What was that for?

Julie: For being the most incredibly guy I’ve ever known. You not only gave Christina life – you saved mine. You really are a hero, Chris. (they kiss again)

Karen’s apartment:

Karen: I had a wonderful time tonight.

Joe: Hey are you sure you’re OK staying alone here?

Karen: Yeah the sofa bed got a little cramped last night.

Joe: Well it’s definitely not built for two.

Karen: We ended up pretty tangled in each other.

Joe: I’d be lying if I said it didn’t feel terrific.

Karen: Yeah me, too.

Joe: Hey this is the end of our date, huh? Weird.

Karen: Yeah, but nice.

Joe: You are beautiful.

(Joe takes Karen’s face in his hands and kisses her)

Joe: Hey listen, I better get going – I’ve got an early shift tomorrow.

Karen: OK

Joe: I’ll see you tomorrow.

Karen: Yeah.

Joe: Thank you for a great evening.

Karen: Thank you.

In front of the campfire….

Kevin (reading his new pages to Eve): She was the kind of a woman who knew how to open a door. Not just any door, all doors. The one to his heart, the one to his soul, the one to places he never dreamed he’d go. She was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen and he was the envy of all men. With one look from her deep, dark eyes he felt invincible. She was the rarest of all creatures – a woman who knew how to love a man. And when he held her in his arms, and felt her strong, steady heart beat against his, he knew he was holding a miracle.

Eve: You wrote that about me? Oh gosh Kevin – I can’t live up to that.

Kevin: You already have. (he kisses her) What’s wrong?

Eve: Your writing is beautiful – but it’s very sad you know? A woman in search of her missing child.

Kevin: It made you think of your son.

Eve: That one that called me “Mommy”. That voice I heard.

Kevin: It wasn’t real Eve.

Eve: I know, I know – I keep telling myself that, over and over and over. But the same question keeps popping up in my head – What if? What if it is real? What if my son is alive?

And the show is OVER.

Kim
