The show opens in the Blood Drive room at GH with Joe & Frank Scanlon.

Frank: Hey!

Joe: Frank, what are you doing here? You already donated, didn’t you?

Frank: Yeah, uh, Courtney got called in to a job and said she might be a little late to Neil’s chemo so I thought I might hang out with him. Is he around?

Joe: He went to the Coffee Shop with Mom to get something to drink.

Frank: You know I still say you cheated in our little game of indoor hoops the other day, so I’m ready for a rematch whenever you are.

Joe: Frank I did that for Neil.

Frank: It was fun tho’ – like old times?

Joe: You and I are a long way from old times.

Frank: My mistake.

Joe: Look Frank, Neil loves you, and you and Courtney have a good thing going, and that’s good for him. We’re even. Well, we’re not killing each other.

Frank: Then what’s the problem?

Joe: Same thing as it’s always been. You tried to destroy my relationship with Karen and until you can admit that things can never be the way they were with us Frank.

GH Cafeteria with Mary Scanlon, Kevin Collins & Neil Kanelos

Mary: Well there’s my favorite stepson! Hi!

Kevin: Well, my one and only step-Mom, at least I hope so. Neil, what’s up?

Neil: Chemo, and this stupid runny nose.

Kevin: Wow, double drag.

Neil: Yeah.

Mary: Listen, why don’t you get yourself a drink huh, and I’ll wait here with Kevin. And see if you can get something with Vitamin C in it.

Neil: Yes, Grandma. (He leaves)

Kevin: (to Mary) Is his condition any better?

Mary: Worse, everyday. Joe spends all his off hours working either in research, or running the blood drive – it’s awful. And Courtney’s just a wreck.

Kevin: Sorry to hear that.

Neil: Out of orange juice – can you believe that?

Mary: Well the nerve of them!

Kevin: Oh, I can’t believe that!

Neil: They sent a guy down to the 2nd floor kitchen to get some. It’ll take a few minutes.

PA System: Mary Collins 6th floor Nurses Station. Mary Collins please report to the 6th floor Nurses Station.

Mary: I have to answer that.

Kevin: Well duty calls – go ahead, I’ll hang out with Neil.

Mary: Oh that’d be great! Just bring him back to the Blood Drive area, that’s where Joe is, okay?

Kevin: I’m headed that way myself.

Mary: Great (to Neil) See you later. (She leaves)

Kevin: All right Mr. Man, have a seat.

(Updater’s note – do you suppose Kevin is secretly hanging out with Carly on the GH side of Port Charles? She used to call Michael “Mr. Man” all the time. OK – maybe it’s just me…)

Neil: Are you waiting around here for Eve?

Kevin: Actually no, I’m here to donate blood to the bone marrow drive.

Neil: Cool! Maybe you’ll be a match for me!

Kevin: Hey, that would be cool. I’ll keep my fingers crossed.

Neil: You know, if they don’t find a match, I could die.

(The expression on Jon Lindstrom’s face is almost indescribable at this statement from Neil. It’s seems to be a mixture of “oh no” to “how can this little boy be so calm saying this?” to I just don’t know what!)

Neil: Uh, you want some of what I’m drinking? It’s way better for you than that coffee.

Kevin: Well if you say so it must be true. I’ll even go one better than that – I’m buying! (He gives Neil some money) I want change back from that! (He watches Neil leave with a concerned look on his face)

The Firehouse with Serena and Scott

Serena: Has Lucy called yet?

Scott: Uh no, no Serena. I guess that fire at Aunt Charlene’s must be quite a mess.

Serena: Are the animals ok?

Scott: Yeah I’m sure that Lucy’s taking care of the animals – she’s probably got ‘em all checked in to some suite at the Ritz!

Serena: (giggles) I just can’t wait to see ‘em again. I miss ‘em.

Scott: They should be back very, very soon. Have you finished reading Harry Potter yet?

Serena: I’m about halfway done.

Scott: Well by the time you finish it they should be back and we also gotta get you ready for school. (Phone rings) Uh, let me get the phone. Hello?

Julie: Scott it’s Julie – what’s happening?

Scott: Well we’re just waiting for the verdict.

Julie: Well should it take this long?

Scott: Well it’s only been a day, Julie.

Julie: Well promise that you’ll call me as soon as you hear something.

Scott: Yeah, I will. As soon as I know anything, all right? Now I gotta go, I’ll catch you later. (Hangs up)

Serena: Was that Julie Devlin?

Scott: Yeah, why?

Serena: How can you work for the person that killed Neil’s Dad?

Opening Credits

Back to the GH Cafeteria w/ Neil & Kevin

Kevin: I tell you I’ve had some power drinks in my day but that is by far the best power drink I ever had in my whole life!

Neil: Yeah, my Dad turned me on to these. When the chemo usually makes me kinda sick to my stomach, I drink one of these, it usually helps. (Reading from the local newspaper) “Jury dol, dolerbrates in Kanelos murder” What’s dolerbrates mean?

Kevin: Deliberates. That’s what a jury does when all the evidence is in. They go into a room and they talk about everything that they’ve seen and they’ve heard and they try to decide whether or not the person on trial is guilty.

Neil: So if they say she’s innocent does that mean she didn’t do it?

Kevin: Not necessarily – we may never know if Julie actually committed the crime or not.

Neil: Sorta lousy if you ask me.

Kevin: You got that right. Have you been following the trial?

Neil: Nah – it’s boring. Besides I don’t wanna upset my Dad with a bunch of lame questions about my other Dad.

Kevin: I don’t think he’d mind if you asked.

Neil: My parents have been going through a lot, you know? My Mom got in a car crash and lost the baby she was carrying.

Kevin: Yeah, I heard about that – I’m sorry.

Neil: We’d better go. Can’t be late for chemo. (They leave)

Back to the Blood drive room.

Frank: Joe, I thought we were done playing old records.

Joe: Frank, how can you stand in this room where we’re fighting to save a kid we both love, and refuse to do something that might be vital to his recovery, huh?

Frank: How can admitting that I broke up you and Karen help Neil?

Joe: We would be stronger for Neil if we were a team through all of this! I mean is keeping this lie really so important to you?

Frank: It’s not the lie I can’t let go of.

Joe: Wells then what? What is it? What did Karen and I ever do to you?

Frank: You wouldn’t get it.

Joe: No, no, no, Frank, I’m here, I’m here and I’m listening.

Frank: I watched you grow up Joe. I watched you ace medical school, become a hell of a doctor, make Mom so happy she could hardly stand it.

Joe: I couldn’t have done any of those things without you and you know that.

Frank: I helped you because of what I got in return. The way you looked up to me – like you were as proud of me, as I was of you.

Joe: I was.

Frank: Then how come – when I needed you most you bailed on me. When I was nailed for using drugs I needed you to back me.

Joe: You wanted me to lie – say I wrote a prescription for tiazelan, which I didn’t.

Frank: I wanted you to believe in me – trust me when I told you I didn’t take those drugs.

Joe: Frank, you tested positive!

Frank: My word was always good enough for you Joe, and it shoulda been then.

Joe: You’re right it shoulda been but it wasn’t. I doubted you and I’m sorry. But that does not justify what you did to Karen and me. Nothing could.

Frank: I was angry.

Joe: You spied on us Frank! My God, when I think of what you saw!

Frank: Joe, I’m not the same person that I was then – I’ve changed.

Joe: Okay – Courtney has been good for you.

Frank: Look I don’t expect us to be the way we were. At least let us get to the point where we can shoot a game of hoops without making such a big deal.

Joe: Well, getting all this out in the open, I mean it’s a step in the right direction.

Back to the Firehouse with Serena & Scott

Serena: I know John Kanelos wasn’t really Neil’s Dad, but Neil was sad when he died.

Scott: I know – I remember.

Serena: Why do you have to be Julie’s lawyer?

Scott: Come over here for a second, sit down all right, I have to tell you something. Julie had another lawyer, but she fired him.

Serena: So you offered to take his place?

Scott: Yes, yes I did.

Serena: Because you think Julie didn’t kill John?

Scott: Well because I was the only one in the courtroom that could represent her, so I did.

Serena: You’re really nice, Dad.

Scott: Well listen, do you remember when Julie found Christina out in the snow after she crawled away? You know, she saved Christina so I wanted to pay her back for that?

Serena: She says she didn’t kill John. Is Julie telling the truth?

(Updater’s note # 2 – Oh Serena – that’s what we’d ALL like to know!)

Scott: Well I don’t know whether she is or she isn’t – the point is that she deserves someone to stand up and to fight for her.

Serena: If you say that’s she innocent and you think she might have done it, isn’t that called lying?

Scott: All I’m supposed to do is just put the facts out there – that’s for the jury to decide.

Serena: But you’re the best lawyer in the whole wide world.

Scott: Thank you.

Serena: Which means you’ll probably win.

Scott: It’s possible.

Serena: What if she did do it? She’ll be loose. What if she hurts someone else?

Scott: C’mere, c’mere, c’mere. You know you’re asking some questions here that I’ve asked myself. It’s just that I don’t have all the answers Serena. It’s just uh; everybody deserves their chance to tell their side of the story. I am just giving Julie the chance to get up there and tell her side of the story and hope for the best, you know? (Phone rings) I’ll get it, I’ll get it. Hello? Yeah – what? That’s the worst part of the testimony – they wanna, the jury wants to hear that back? You’re kidding. Yeah, yeah, I know – all right well just keep me posted, I’ll talk to you later, bye. (to Serena) We okay with this?

Serena: I’m not so sure I understand, but thanks for trying to explain it to me.

Scott: I wish someone would explain it to me.

Commercial

Back to the Blood drive room at GH – w/ Joe and Karen

Karen: Hey – how’s business going?

Joe: Couldn’t be better!

Karen: You’re in a cheery mood.

Joe: Yes I am – my contact at the National Institute of Health called.

Karen: About the clinical trials they’re running in Los Angeles for the new drug therapy?

Joe: Neil matches all the requirements. He can start in the program right away!

Karen: Joe – finally some encouraging news!

Joe: Yeah, I can’t wait to tell Neil – hey you wanna hear another shocker?

Karen: Two in one day?

Joe: Well this is different this is about you and me. Frank confessed to everything, Karen.

Karen: What do you mean?

Joe: About being behind breaking up you and me, spying on us, everything - he owned up to all of it!

Karen: I can’t believe that – I wonder why he would tell you now?

Joe: I don’t know, who knows, he’s got a conscience, or something, it’s like a ton of anger just left my body.

Karen: Yeah, anger can really tear people apart.

Joe: Hey listen I came down pretty hard on you about the accident. I’m sorry – I wasn’t there.

Karen: The insurance report came back. No fault decision – turns out the accident was just that – an accident.

Joe: What? Why didn’t you tell me sooner?

Karen: I didn’t think it would change what’s been going on with us.

Joe: I guess Frank isn’t the only one who needs to put his anger in check, huh?

GH Cafeteria

Frank: Hey, gotcha, oh, where you been, I’ve been looking all over for ya!

Neil: I was in the Coffee Shop with Kevin.

Frank: Whoa, I was just in there, I didn’t see you.

Kevin: Well we had to make a detour through the gift shop so Neil could show off all his favorite action figures.

Frank: Oh wow, you let him in on the Super Hero club, huh? Congrats Kevin, the kid must like you!

Neil: So what are you doing here, Uncle Frank?

Frank: I came to hang out with you while you get your chemo. And I brought you some new videos. You want me to pop some in get a sneak preview?

Neil: Can we wait till the treatment? I wanted to help Dad out with the blood drive until my chemo.

Frank: Sure.

Kevin: Why don’t you go on inside Neil, I’ll see you in there.

Neil: OK and remember – keep your fingers crossed about being a match for me! (Kevin shows Neil crossed fingers as Neil leaves)

Frank: Looks like you two really hit it off.

Kevin: Hmm.

Frank: You know Kevin – he’s really been keeping a tight lid on things lately.

Kevin: Well he’s dealing with a lot for someone his age.

Frank: It can’t be healthy for him to keep it all bottled up on the inside. Look – do you think it would help Neil to talk to a professional?

Kevin: Yeah, I do.

Frank: Well I know that you and I haven’t exactly…

Kevin: No we haven’t, and we probably won’t – but what do you mean?

Frank: Would you help Neil?

Kevin: Obviously you care about him. It’s just that putting Neil into therapy is a decision only his parents can make. Sorry. (He leaves, Frank looks pained.)

The green walls of Ferncliff, w/ Scott & Julie

Scott: The jury wants Cooper’s testimony and Garcia’s read back.

Julie: They’re going for a conviction. Why else would they ask for those transcripts?

Scott: Let’s not jump to conclusions.

Julie: What happens if they find me guilty?

Scott: We appeal.

Julie: And how long does that take?

Scott: Up to eight years.

Julie: Eight years? Waiting to see if I’m gonna be set free, spend a lifetime in prison, or worse!

Scott: Now Julie don’t try and get inside the minds of the jurors ‘cause it’ll just make you nutty.

Julie: Well some people think I already am. What if they didn’t believe me when I took the stand? I’m not sure my own attorney did, so how can I expect them to?

Scott: I’ve got some questions.

Julie: Ask them.

Scott: I am bound my lawyer client confidentiality so whatever you say stays here.

Julie: What do you want to know?

Scott: Did you kill John Kanelos?

Commercial

Back to Ferncliff Visitor’s Room w/ Scott & Julie

Julie: Trial’s over Scott – why are you asking me this now?

Scott: ‘Cause I’ll sleep better knowing I didn’t put a killer back out on the streets.

Julie: Then sweet dreams – you defended an innocent person. All right – your turn – what are you thinking right now?

Scott: I’m thinking somebody that would save a baby, and two prison guards, when they could run, that’s not a guilty person to me.

Julie: If I’m released, a lot of people are gonna close their doors in my face – I hope you won’t be one of them!

Scott: I won’t walk the other way when I see you coming.

Julie: Maybe we’ll even wave!

Scott: I’ll let you know when the testimony is read back to the jury.

Julie: Say hello to Lucy for me.

Scott: Well she and Christina left town, but I’ll pass it along.

Julie: Where did they go?

Scott: Well there was a fire up at Aunt Charlene’s nothing serious. I’ll check with you later. (He leaves)

Julie: Damnit Lucy – for taking my baby away again. I need to get out of here! Chris….

Back to the Blood drive room.

Kevin: (hamming it up for Neil’s benefit) Oh, oh, doc – just tell me when it’s over…..oh…..

Joe: Look’s like we got ourselves a yellow-bellied coward here, son….

Neil: Don’t be scared partner, just do what I do…

Joe: (laughs)

Kevin: What is it you do?

Neil: Whenever I get my blood taken, I just think about my favorite comic book.

Kevin: Lemme guess – Superman?

Neil: No way! Fantastic Four – Issue # 85 – the one where Captain Fantastic has to use his special powers to keep Doctor Doom from taking over the world!

Kevin: Oh – that sounds like a good one!

Joe: Ok – free to go sir!

Kevin: What that’s it? I didn’t even know it was over!

Neil: Fantastic Four works every time! Well, Mom’s probably at the nurses station right now, so I better go.

Joe: I’ll catch up with you in a few, Ok?

Neil: Ok – see ya Kevin.

Kevin: I’ll see ya Neil. (Neil leaves) He’s a great kid, you know.

Joe: You don’t have to tell me. You got a minute?

Kevin: (laughing – he just gave blood so he’s taking it easy and drinking the prerequisite orange juice!) I guess so yeah, sure.

Joe: Then uh, I’m a little concerned about Neil. He’s acting a little distant lately. We had a lot going on around the house and everything.

Kevin: Concerned that he might be stuffing his feelings?

Joe: Yeah.

Kevin: Frank mentioned it to me earlier.

Joe: You spoke to Frank about this?

Kevin: All I told him was that any decision about Neil had to made by his parents.

Joe: Well, would you be interested in seeing him? I mean he’s obviously comfortable with you.

Kevin: Sorry this is strange. It’s just that since Julie I haven’t taken on any patients at all – I was beginning to consider myself retired.

Joe: Oh c’mon – you’re too good at what you do for that.

Kevin: I admit – I miss it. I’ll do it, I’ll do it, I’d love to work with him.

Joe: Thanks Kevin – you’re a good man.

Kevin: You know kids are smart Joe – they sense difficulties in their parents and they tend to keep to themselves - they don’t wanna add stress.

Joe: That’s why he needs someone on the outside to confide in. I’ll speak to Courtney as soon as I can.

Kevin: Let me know what you wanna do.

Joe: Ok.

Neil: Dad – I forgot my….

Joe: Backpack? Here you go, sport….

Neil: Thanks. (Joe and Neil hug, and Kevin smiles, watching). See ya.

Joe: Have a good one.

In the hallway – with Karen and Frank

Karen: Frank wait!

Frank: Karen, not now.

Karen: I overhead you asking Kevin about Neil.

Frank: So you came to rub my face in it?

Karen: No, I could see how hard it was for you not to be able to tell Kevin you’re Neil’s father.

Frank: Whoa, is that sympathy I see?

Karen: Don’t be a jerk, Frank. This secret is killing both of us and I don’t know about you but I can’t keep it up.

Frank: You mean you’re going to tell Neil?

Karen: Not as long as he’s this sick. But things might start turning around for Neil soon.

Frank: Why, do you know something?

Karen: There’s this clinical trial for a new chemo drug – Joe got Neil accepted into the program.

Frank: That’s incredible.

Karen: Yeah it is for Neil, and for Joe – it’s put him in a whole new frame of mind.

Frank: What are you getting at?

Karen: It’s time you and Courtney told Joe the truth.

Frank: Karen…

Karen: I mean it Frank – I won’t keep up this lie – Joe has every right to know he’s not Neil’s father…. (Unbeknownst to Frank and Karen – Neil is hearing everything from the stairwell)

And the show is OVER
