Port Charles Update for Friday, 21-Jan-2000

Karen pleads with Frank to leave Courtney and Joe alone with Neil in his room. He thinks he should go to Neil at this time but Karen thinks it should be Joe. Mary tells Frank how upset she is with him. She has been trying to excuse his recent behavior because of the DL-56, but that doesn't excuse his sleeping with his brother's girlfriend ten years ago. She is disgusted with him. Frank sounds very sincere when he says how upset he was when Joe found out the truth. Also, he has been tortured watching Joe and Neil together. All he cares about now is Neil's welfare. Mary seems to soften toward him.

In Neil's room, Joe tells him that he understands how he feels because he also did not know that he wasn't Neil's father. Courtney comes in and climbs into bed next to Neil. He tries to turn away from her and cringes when she strokes his arm. Courtney tells her son that she knows he must have a lot of questions. She wants him to remember that she loves him and always will. Neil takes off his oxygen mask and says "get away from me." Courtney tries to explain that when she told Neil that Joe was his father, she really believed that. Neil says that she always taught him not to lie, but she is the biggest liar ever. He gasps for air. Joe tells Courtney to leave. He puts the mask back on Neil and tells him tenderly that he still loves him. Neil turns away from him. Outside Neil's room, Courtney tells Joe that she's never seen such a hurt look in Neil's eyes. Joe asks her what she expected. How many times can you tell a kid that the man he thought was his father is not? He hopes that Courtney will learn to put Neil's needs before her own.

Karen tells Matt that he was right - she should have told Joe the truth when she found out. Matt reminds her that she was just doing what she thought was best. Joe comes along and asks Karen to order more chest x-rays for Neil. He tells her how Neil just had problems breathing. Karen asks if Neil is talking to him yet. Joe says no, but he understands how it feels to be lied to by someone you care about. Matt expresses his concern about the situation to Joe. Joe is amazed that the gossip has reached him already. Karen explains that Matt didn't find out just then. He has known. Joe fumes. How could she tell other people without telling him? Matt tells Joe that Karen didn't want to upset him after Courtney lost the baby. It suddenly dawns on Joe! The baby wasn't his either! Did Karen know that also? She explains that she did paternity tests using Frank's blood. Karen apologizes over and over and finally walks away. Joe goes to Frank and asks him why he hates him. Frank says he doesn't. Joe asks him why he slept with Courtney ten years ago. Frank said it just happened. Frank wanted to tell Joe about Neil before Courtney lost the baby. Frank admits he knew the baby was his and tells him how they arranged that Courtney's baby was Frank's. Joe says that he didn't only lose a son. He lost a brother too.

Kevin and Eve are outside Rachel's office. Eve managed to get a key from the janitor. Kevin doesn't want her to go in with him. He doesn't want her to lose her job. She insists that they are a team and she has proven she can be a good snoop with him. While they are searching the office, the phone rings. They listen as the caller leaves a message for "Livvy" and leaves a phone number which Eve jots down. When they are outside Rachel's office, discussing calling the number, Courtney comes along and asks Kevin to talk to Neil. When Eve is alone, she looks at the phone number and grins. Later, she uses her cell phone and calls the number. She says she is Livvy's friend. The woman asks how she got the number. Eve says she got it from Livvy. She is worried about her. The woman says she takes care of her own. Eve digs for information but the woman is evasive. A few seconds after they hang up, Eve's phone rings. When she answers, there is nobody there. Realizing it must be the woman using a *69, she sighs and rolls her eyes.

Joe is meditating in the chapel. Karen comes in and sits beside him. She goes on and on about loving him, about being sorry for things she did and wishing she could have done things differently. He doesn't flinch until Karen gets up to leave. He says he could have gone through it all if she had told the truth.

Frank tells Courtney that he wants to talk to Neil. Courtney says that Neil doesn't want to talk to either of them. She tells him that Kevin is talking to Neil.

Kevin encourages Neil to talk to him. He says he knows about the situation. He explains that sometimes it's better to talk with someone who is not so involved or close. Neil doesn't respond, so Kevin says he won't pressure him. He starts to leave but Neil calls his name. He asks "if Joe isn't my father, then who is?" Kevin goes to talk with Courtney, Joe and Frank outside Neil's room. He says this is more complicated than they thought. Neil doesn't know that Frank is his father. For once, they all agree that Neil should be told right away who his father is. Kevin says that Joe should be the one to tell Neil. Joe agrees. When he walks over to the door to Neil's room, Frank blocks the door and says "no way."
