Claire has been released from the hospital and allowed to go home. Scott and Serena are visiting her. Serena has brought some buttercups, per their prior conversation in the hospital. The idea is to see who likes butter best by holding the flowers up to their chins and see whose chin turns yellowest. Scott is to be the judge. After some light bantering about flowers and butter, Serena goes inside to help Claire's father (The Colonel), who is baking banana bread.
Scott and Claire stay outside on the porch, and have a serious conversation. Claire says she has learned some important things about fathers and daughters by watching Scott and Serena. She is glad she called her own father, and relieved that now neither of them have to face her situation alone. Claire wishes she had called him sooner; she is thankful that Scott helped her father understand and respect her decision to die at home, instead of staying in the hospital.

Frank comes home after working the night shift to find that Courtney has prepared a nice meal, complete with candles, for him. He bluffs, telling her that he knows what she's up to. He is able to convice her that he already knows, so she confesses everything about her arrangement with Lucy. She apologizes, but Frank isn't buying it. He tells her he didn't know anything about Lucy before what Courtney just told him. Now, he wants the details on the deal he DID know about, which is the deal she tried to make with Chris.
We assume Courtney told him about trying to blackmail Chris, because when we return to them, Frank is yelling at her. He says that she knew Christina was his daughter, and instead of coming straight to him with the news, she went to Chris to try to "shake him down for money". He smashes a flower vase and accuses her of trying to sell his daughter, not once but twice. She says she loves him, and only did it because they needed the money (he had been gambling, and had just been shot). She insists that whoever told him about this must have painted it in the most unflattering light possible. Frank tells her he found out from Jamal (waiter at Amanda's party) that Chris had tried to spike Courtney's drink. That was what tipped Frank off to Courtney's deceit. Courtney tears up a bit and explains to Frank that when someone you love makes a mistake, you forgive them, and try to understand. Frank isn't buying it and storms out, leaving Courtney to clean up the spilled flowers.

Rachel approaches Alan at the hospital. He tries to brush past her, but she insists of speaking with him. She wants his professional advice about her mother. Alan tells her she should have come to him earlier, thereby sparing all of them a lot of trouble. He walks off without giving her any advice.

Julie seeks out Chris at GH. She tells him the Judge is ready to make a ruling on Christina. She is ready to rule on everything: Lucy's petition to adopt, as well as Julie's petition to regain custody. She says "we need to be at the courthouse on Friday morning". Chris is pleased to hear her say "we". Julie explains that she has given it some thought, and Chris deserves to be there. Also, she adds, she WANTS Chris to be there.
Rachel walks up. She just wanted to let them know that she spoke to the Judge and gave Julie a positive recommendation. Julie and Chris are both furious. They didn't ask Rachel to intervene, and they don't want her help. Chris tells Rachel that she has been fired. Julie suggests she go find another patient's life to screw up. Rachel says that, if Julie wins the custody fight, it will be because of her (Rachel). Julie angrily points out that Rachel was the one who wanted Julie to wait to claim Christina. Rachel claims she cares very much about Julie. Julie stalks off, and Chris follows.
Alone again, Chris tells Julie he can't understand why Rachel won't get the message: Get Lost! Julie says that at least Rachel believes that Christina belongs with Julie. Chris isn't so sure what Rachel really believes, or where all this "maternal" concern is coming from, given her own unstable mother. Julie laughs and says she doesn't really want to know.

Alan stops by Karen's apartment to talk. He says he wants to apologize for putting so much pressure on her during the strike. He tells her that he was also tempted to dip into the meds during the strike. Karen says it was her own fault, that she was not up to being chief resident. She says that Alan helped her once (during her pre-med school drug problem) and she can't ask him to help her again. Alan says that of course she can ask for help...if not from him, then she should pick someone else.
Karen says she knows she has to take the first step toward recovery by herself. Alan tells her that this is not the case (based on his experiences as an addict himself, and as the father of an addict). She says she just needs some time to think about things. Alan points out that she doesn't, that taking time is just an excuse to hide out in her apartment and keep taking pills. He gives her a brochure for a rehab clinic that is just for addicted doctors and tells her to give the clinic a call.

Scott and Serena are back at the firehouse. Serena asks why Claire is so happy, since she's going to die. Scott explains that Claire knows she can't do anything to prevent her death, and she has made peace with the situation. That's what allows her to feel happy and enjoy the time she has left. Serena asks if Mommy (Dominique) was happy at the end, as well. Scott explains that, once she knew she was pregnant with Serena, she was very happy. Next Serena wants to know if Lucy was happy during that time. Scott tactfully focuses his reply on Lucy's joy about carrying Serena (and not mentioning her grief over Dom). Serena points out that Lucy has not been happy lately, because she is worried about Christina. Serena says she will be very good, do all her chores, and quit her after-school art class to come home and help Lucy with the baby. Scott tells her not to do this.
Serena says that the whole mess is Julie's fault. Scott tells her that Julie is not trying to hurt them; she justs wants what she thinks is best for Christina. When Serena points out that what Julie thinks is best is not what they think is best, Scott commends her for hitting the nail on the head. Scott reassures her that he still thinks Christina should stay with them. Serena is glad to hear it, because she has heard Lucy say that Scott is the only one who can make that happen.

Courtney approaches Rachel at the hospital. She assures Rachel that she isn't going to press charges regarding the poisoned wedding cake incident...providing that Rachel does something for her. Courtney wants Rachel to help her destroy Chris. When Rachel asks why she would want to do this, Courtney tells her that Chris was the one who spiked her drink at Amanda Barrington's party, and thereby cost her the seat on the hospital board.

Frank drops by to see Scott. Frank tells Scott about the deal between Lucy and Courtney. Frank believes Scott when Scott says he knew nothing about it. Scott explains that he is not surprised, as Lucy has been half out of her mind over the prospect of loosing Christina. Frank tells Scott that he can take care of things (ie Courtney) on his end, but thinks Scott will have his hands full taking care of Lucy. Scott agrees. He says he doesn't know what he is going to do, but he will do something. Frank says he doesn't want to make trouble; he believes that Scott and Lucy are providing a good home for Christina. He just wanted Scott to know what was going on.
