News for the week of 31-Oct-2011

by Carol Banks Weber

Melody Thomas Scott (Nikki) has played her Y&R character for so long, she could probably write story in place of the actual writers. (Good thing she can tweak script over there.) Nikki is a tough customer but infinitely rewarding to play, a blend of vulnerability with unlikeability. Mused Thomas Scott, “I've always tried to make her vulnerable even if she's doing something heinous. I always try to show a little bit of vulnerability underneath it all. That makes her human and relatable, so people feel for her.” GlobalTV.com, October 24, 2011

Christel Khalil (Lily) will divorce her husband Stephen Hensley, after having been married since September 2008. The separation was announced recently on SOD, October 25th. They share a son, Michael, age one.

The road to a romantic Parisian proposal didn’t come easy for John Driscoll (Chance) and his long-time squeeze, Beth Nelson. The two could almost be childhood sweethearts; they grew up together in Virginia through middle school and high school before connecting back up later, after college. Thanks to Nelson’s job with an international airplane leasing company, they were able to score a visit to Paris for a little holiday away. This was when Driscoll plotted to propose to her and when she expected a proposal. Only thing is, the actor plotted to do it later on in the trip while she had hoped to be proposed to the first night, as they enjoyed their million-dollar views of the Louvre, the Seine, and the Eiffel Tower from the Westin Hotel. She even brought up her disappointment and thoughts of regret in staying with him. Instead of freaking out and giving her what she wanted, Driscoll calmly kept biding his time, until the time was right. It happened the last day of their trip, on board a boat and with a professional photographer pal named Philippe nearby — she thought this was for a routine photo shoot — despite the rain, the photographer’s camera not working, and a group of loud tourists from a Georgia high school getting in the way and almost blowing it. Driscoll did his thing. “Right before we got on the boat, the rain disappeared, the sun came out and Philippe’s camera started working again. We started taking photos, so we’re hugging, holding hands and kissing for all the lovey-dovey shots. About 15 minutes into it, there was lull in the action and Beth looked over the stem of the boat down to the water,” Driscoll described. One of the Georgia high school girls caught him about to whip out the ring and propose, and actually was about to let out a shriek but he made her be quiet with a finger to the lips. He got to have his romantic, surprising proposal after all. “She started crying and said yes. She took one look at the ring and said, ‘Oh, my God. It’s so big.’ As a guy, you don’t mind hearing that [laughs].” Driscoll and his fiancĂ©e plan to marry it up back in Virginia next fall, and maybe hit Paris again for a honeymoon, or Tahiti. –Soap Opera Digest, October 25, 2011

Diana DeGarmo (Angelina) can sing. She almost won American Idol’s season three, that’s how good she is. But for her Y&R role as the colorful daughter of mobster Angelo, DeGarmo has to sing like she can’t, which is a lot harder than it appears. She’s up to the challenge. Turns out, she was re-discovered for the role by Y&R executive producer Maria Bell while singing at the Hollywood Bowl for Hairspray, a special performance. “It was the aligning of the stars. … Everyone at Y&R has been so nice and welcoming, which is refreshing. As you know, the entertainment industry is not so sweet all the time.” –TV Guide, Michael Logan interview, October 24, 2011

The highest bidding fan will win a double prize: first, Y&R will create a character in the winner’s namesake, then the winner will tour Y&R’s set with actor Greg Rikaart (Kevin). Bidding at CharityBuzz.com already started and will wind down on November 2nd. Monies from the bid will go to help the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network.

Fans tend to side with Ronan and Chloe as a couple. Not so much Ronan and Phyllis. Looks like Ronan’s portrayer, Jeff Branson, agrees with the fans. At a recent Calgary event, he might’ve told fans there not to give up on Ronan/Chloe just yet and that Ronan/Phyllis was just a fickle f*ck. The reason given for the switch right now is executive producer Maria Arena Bell wanting to explore the stronger chemistry of Ronan/Phyllis, while Branson was said to like how Chloe brought out a softer side to his character. Fan Leia — who posted an October 24th recap on SoapZone’s Y&R board — posted this pertinent observation: “He pointed out basically that Phyllis was fickle and shouldn’t last. He stressed again, not to give up on the couple. Jeff is a fan of Chloe/Ronan and just as frustrated as we are, they were dropped twice. … BTW, Phyllis and Ronan were booed by the audience. LOL. … But he had a lot of praise for Michelle Stafford. He stressed how much it shows she cares working at Y&R.”

The mobster’s daughter, Angelina, will have eyes only for Kevin in an ensuing comedy for the next few weeks.
