The best way to add depth to a soap character is through secondary characters. Yes there are the actors they have most of their scenes with, but it is through ancillary characters that you get to see other sides of the character.
For example, Brooke pretending to give birth to and pretend mother to Louise to keep him from Peter was good for both characters. It allowed Brooke to mature a bit and the friendship was good for both characters.
And though Ava did horrible things, it was her mentorship of Trina was great for both characters.
Once Adam turns his obsession from his grades to Joss once that plays out the character will be out as well because there is nothing else anchoring him ono the show.
