January 28, 2008 – Sonny and Kate have a conversation after Kate refused Sonny’s proposal in Bensonhurst.

I had been a follower of many storylines on General Hospital, mostly those of Sonny Corinthos, before the story of Sonny and Kate began to be told. For the most part, I was an offliner except for a brief time during the storyline with Sam and Sonny.

When the story of Sonny and Kate reached its climax in January of 2008, I was so drawn to it that I began surfing online message boards discussing the storyline. It happened that the story became more and more depressing around the same time, and this deepened my chronic depression, which had roots in my teenage hood.

January 28, 2008, was a turning point in this regard. These were scenes where Sonny and Kate had a conversation about their relationship and who they were. The conflict that existed in their relationship, both at the time and when they were teenagers. There were hints of a possible secret, but Sonny’s perspective was that the main barrier existed in who Kate had become after she turned her back on her past to pursue her career. That she could not take the emotional risk of making a commitment to him.

There were words that Sonny spoke to Kate that episode that have remained with me in my mind even after so many years:

“… because eventually the contact would be too much for Kate Howard. Connie would show herself more and Kate Howard is not gonna have that. Because she is gonna have her magazine, and she is gonna have her name, and she is gonna have her say, but I tell you what she is going to have nothing else. When she could have had everything.”

I was in depression and with every word the depression deepened. I gave up almost everything in my personal life, including pursing my education, to follow the story day after day. I surrendered myself completely to the world of the soap opera.

The scenes that aired on January 28, 2008, and later on January 30, 2008, paved the way for the introduction of Claudia to the show and to the story of Sonny and Kate. Claudia’s introduction and continued presence in the story was an element of two tragic storylines that were written later on that year.

In January of 2009, the sweeps story was written around a day: January 28, 2009.
