News for the week of 09-Jul-2007
by Carol Banks Weber
Josh Duhon (Logan) had long heard the buzz from fans that he’d become Kin Shriner’s (Scott) on-screen bastard son – way before the writers went public with it as a reveal. The fans would tell him he just bore too much of a striking resemblance, from the looks to the vocal mannerisms to the same angry, young “hothead”ed attitude. Duhon has said he never went in purposely acting like Scott, he was just himself, it was a happy accident that the two vibed somehow as father and son in the end and from the beginning. He added that he wouldn’t have been clever enough to take on such a complex project anyway.
[When Shriner finally found out he’d be gaining a soap son in Logan, he said he reacted with the same dumbfounded skepticism as his character (Scott will question Logan’s motives in the weeks to come), but figured it’s possible, since there’s a missing period in the ‘80s unaccounted for.]
The Scottie swagger and assertiveness reflected in Logan could be directly attributed to Duhon’s paternal influence. Duhon’s real-life father is a real-life, commanding presence, full of dynamic, self-assured confidence in the way he carries himself.
Logan can also be a hothead and a meathead, as Duhon readily admitted to. But he’s hoping to unravel some vulnerability, sensitivity and a good guy (of sorts) underneath, especially in the culmination of Logan’s and Maxie’s nasty bedroom bet. What Duhon hoped will happen is, Logan falls hard for Lulu and beds her as per his bet with Maxie, but then feels like a cad for it, and develops genuine feelings for his mark, feelings he’d buried even before the bet ruined everything.
Coming to this place, according to him, was all about that take-command presence he borrowed from his father. It served him well in the key screentest with powerhouse actress Julie Marie Berman (Lulu). Duhon had “heard that the problem they were having was the guys they were auditioning [for the role], she'd roll right over them. But when we came together, it was like trains colliding and that's what they wanted, that big collision. Julie is an extremely talented actress, so it just makes everything easier when you've got somebody who's committed to their work.”
Other cast mates on board who are equally committed to their work have shown Duhon a thing or two, quite generously. Such as Shriner and Maurice Benard (Sonny). Both have mentored the “sponge” of a soap newcomer, and it’s much appreciated by this Texas native.
In preparation for that Logan and Lulu love scene to come, Duhon good-naturedly said he’s tried to stay prepared by relying on his family’s genes, boxing, jogging, engaging in other sporting activities, and keeping fit in general. It’s not known at this time whether the hair and makeup department plans to cover up the actor’s two tattoos (a Texas flag with “The Truth” in Latin and an American flag with a Bible quote, “Be not overcome by evil but overcome evil with good”). –“Five Minutes With…” by Tom Stacy, Soap Opera Digest online
The venerable soap actor, Maurice Benard (Sonny), has also generously provided plenty of food for thought for another promising, acting newcomer in Jason Gerhardt (Cooper) – voted in the July 3rd issue by Soap Opera Digest editors as GH’s “Hottest Newcomer” – who’s come a long way from janitorial duties in a beauty salon. “I did anything and everything I could to make money, short of selling the body [laughs].” Once he rose above the ranks of gunman #3 (it was always intended for Gerhardt’s Cooper to break away as his own character), he benefited a lot from the generosity of his peers. Kirsten Storms (Maxie) has just been a sweetheart to work with, he said. Not only is she such a receptive acting partner, but she’s also quite a knowledgable, talented one. “She’s young, but she’s been working a long time, so she really knows what she’s doing. She’s got an unbelievable knack for learning dialogue in a few minutes and here I am freaking out over my two-to-three lines [laughs]! She helped me not look too much like a fool.” Besides peer support, Gerhardt has also encountered favorable fan notice, sometimes when he’s out shopping. Of course then there’s the 42-inch plasma TV every red-blooded American male out there covets. While his wife went out of town, Gerhardt splurged on one for their living room, bracing for her negative review. Instead, she sat back and enjoyed herself.
Gerhardt and wife Chalae recently learned they’ll be expanding the family of three (Madyson is 2), by Christmastime. They don’t want to spoil the surprise of their baby-to-be’s gender.
Julie Marie Berman (Lulu) and Michael Grady took their girlfriend/boyfriend relationship to the next level by making it official, they’re getting hitched.
Ingo Rademacher (Jax) pre-filmed some extra scenes before he took off for summer vacation (not Hawaii, but Catalina?), so head writer Bob Guza Jr. promised fans won’t miss the character much on-screen.
John Ingle (Edward) collapsed from the overwhelming heat and an empty stomach while attending the L.A.-based Daytime Emmy awards ceremony June 15. He was taken to a hospital, treated, and released the following day.
Greg Vaughan (Lucky) looks up to Rebecca Herbst (Elizabeth) a lot lately for her motherly advice. A mother of two young children, Herbst recently delighted in Vaughan joining the parents’ club with his newborn son, Jathan. Herbst noted the serendipity of the births of Jathan, her character’s baby with Jason, and even her own baby daughter Ella’s birth—all at around the same time. Jathan was born shortly before Elizabeth started to give birth to Jake. But get this, Herbst added, the filming of Jake’s birth happened on the same day she brought Ella into the world three years ago. “We’ve all been talking about it ever since.” –Soap Opera Digest, July 3, 2007
Natalia Livingston (Emily) has Sebastian Roché (Jerry) to thank for a recent book recommendation. He turned her on to Kahlil Gibran’s “The Prophet,” and she’s so glad he did. Other people have noticed her nose in that book, commenting favorably too.
Back when Kin Shriner (Scott) first showed up for work on ATWT (as Keith), he wound up in the wrong place – try the basement – instead of the soundstage, and had to be steered in the right direction by Cady McClain (Rosanna, ATWT; ex-Dixie, AMC).
Tony Geary (Luke) gave his highest praise to Scott Clifton (Dillon) as kind of a chip off the ole block, and said that while he’s sure Clifton will go far with his abilities, he’ll be missed. Both of them, Clifton now and Geary in his day, Geary explained, had an offbeat, authentic quality to their approach, performances and appearance, that either could work in their favor or not. Neither of them could ever be accused of being cookie-cutter beefcake. “I have been an authentic actor and it worked pretty much against me until I found this role. By authentic I mean off the beaten track – the quirks and the kinks and the personality and the looks department are not at all traditional. Scott has that and I think it will work for him,” Geary said, whether it’s comedy, drama or whatever. And hey, Geary said hopefully, maybe it’s not out of the question to hope for a return later on down the line ala Bill Eckert. –Soap Opera Digest, July 10, 2007
Jackie Zeman (Bobbie) discovered Elizabeth Gilbert’s “Eat, Pray, Love” book of the month through her Malibu Girls’ book club (Tracey Bregman [Lauren, Y&R] asked Zeman to join). She’s discovered many books, books not typically found on her book shelves, but because of this book club, she has given a wide variety of topics a try. “Eat, Pray, Love” is a good book to start a book club with, she suggested.
Corbin Bernsen (ex-Durant) and his wife Amanda Pays have both signed on to be celebrity spokespeople for Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS), a condition they suffer from moderately (and I suffer from occasionally). Bernsen found relief through the advice of a pal a year ago for his problem, which he assumed was the result of jogging all those years before. Pays had to deal with RLS after her second pregnancy, which kept her up many nights. After a doctor’s visit, diagnosis and treatment, Bernsen and Pays were able to find relief. “It certainly took some of the dread away when it came to flying or going to the movies,” attested Bernsen. The condition, according to Bernsen, “has been around since the 1940s. It has been documented. Now we can put a face to it. That’s why we want to help.” –Soap Opera Digest, July 3, 2007
Gossip for the week of 09-Jul-2007

Nikolas and Emily conceive their Christ child either this summer or for Fall Sweeps.
Did ABC Daytime president Brian Frons entertain the idea of Galen Gering (Luis, PSNS) on his L.A.-based GH, its SoapNet offshoot Night Shift, or an entirely different vehicle altogether? And who was this mysterious, unnamed brown-noser hitting Frons up for a soap job at the Emmys?
I forgot to mention Lindze Letherman’s (Georgie) golden globes at the Daytime Emmys. Good Lord, woman, what’s the point?? Take a few tips from AMC’s Amber Childers (Colby) or Rebecca Herbst (Elizabeth, GH), less is more.
Still waiting for Jerry to cross paths with Bobbie. Buttmunches.
