News for the week of 16-Nov-2009

Erika Slezak (Viki) is all for the gay storyline surrounding her character, Robin Strasser’s (Dorian), and those of Kish. The pro-gay rights actress spoke out about the travesty of certain factions in society going against the tolerant tide in a recent interview with Advocate.com writer Michael Fairman. For Slezak, tying in her mayoral story with the gay vote was nothing short of genius on head writer Ron Carlivati’s part. It’s just too bad the real world can’t take a hint. “What pissed me off in Maine ... my God, what did they do up there? To repeal gay rights for same-sex marriage ... it’s idiotic! Who cares what people do together as long as they are happy? I don’t get the big difference between marriage, civil union, and living together, and I am Catholic. Marriage means you commit to each other and there is a piece of paper that says, ‘I want to be with you forever,’ or as long as we love each other.”

In another topic entirely, Slezak revealed Roscoe Born’s (Mitch) innovative approach to Mitch’s relationship with Viki. It’s born of his fear of and competition with her and it’s an approach Slezak can get behind. “Mitch wants Viki. I don’t mean sexually,” Slezak explained. “He wants to own her and the type of power and class she has, which is what Dorian wants. Dorian has always wanted to be Viki, because she wants what Viki represents, which is money, class, elegance, and brains. Mitch wants the same thing. His way of trying to get it is ... he raped Viki and wanted a child with her! And the only person who can really hurt him is Viki, if she turns him down, or if she is mean and horrible and rude to him. We had a really good scene when Mitch fell apart because Viki slapped him and told him he is a monster and disgusting and don’t ever touch her family, and that is what fuels him.”

Michael Easton (John) understands the popularity of his pairing with Melissa Archer (Natalie), still, after almost two years of nothing since their last on-screen break-up. He’s always been favorable about Archer’s work and how great it feels for him when they’re paired up together in any capacity. He also gave Jolie fans a thrill recently when he stated that Natalie seems to be the only paramour John’s said “I love you” to, however in medical distress he was at the time.

Easton was also kind and awe-struck toward Trevor St. John (Todd) for the kind of underrated work he’s been turning in. “I really enjoy Trevor. I think he makes interesting choices every day and always does something that is really interesting to watch. He's a really great actor, and he doesn't get enough credit for how good he really is.” –ABC Soaps in Depth

Some of OLTL’s cast and crew were treated to a two-day, on-location shoot last week in New Jersey, in relation to upcoming story about Ross possibly kidnapping someone on the border between Washington state (a Seattle hospital is where he is with Danielle, Tea and Todd) and Canada. The Nevius Street Bridge, located in the Raritan borough of Somerset County, suited TPTB for its proximity to traffic, its aesthetic appeal and its use solely for pedestrians. Viewers can expect to watch the on-location shoot December 7 and 14, featuring Blair, Todd, Tea, Ross, Bo, Danielle and Nora.

Scott Evans (Fish) doesn’t want people singling out his recurring status compared to co-star Brett Claywell’s (Kyle) contract status when watching Kish’s love story unfold on OLTL. He would rather they enjoy the love story of two people, and said that a lot of straight fans are loving the union too, not just gays. He also would rather we view Kyle and Fish as people falling in love, not necessarily sensationalizing the gay angle. “Brett and I have said from beginning, we don’t think we’re telling a gay storyline. We’re telling a storyline. Whether you are gay or straight, it doesn’t matter, you can relate to it.” Boston Herald, article and follow-up by Mark Perigard, November 10, 2009

Erika Slezak (Viki) made sense of the ongoing rumor of OLTL’s imminent cancellation by pointing to the financially sensible decision of TPTB to move the show to a bigger and better and more efficient studio down the street (where AMC films). That doesn’t sound to her like plans for cancellation, but investment. Furthermore, “I had a conversation about a different subject with Brian Frons (president, ABC Daytime) and he said, ‘No. I have great faith in One Life and I have great faith in [executive producer] Frank Valentini.’ As long as the status quo is maintained and our ratings stay up, I think they have an investment in the show to keep it on the air as long as they can. At least I hope so.” –quote from Michael Fairman’s November 12, 2009 interview in Advocate.com

Now that Kyle and Fish are a couple, why not explore Kyle’s predilection for dirty blackmailing rubbing up against Fish’s do-gooder savior complex? That’d make an awesome story. Unless this really is a gay gimmick by TIIC.
