News for the week of 04-Sep-2006

by Carol Banks Weber

OLTL’s requisite recap-preview-interview segment on the one-hour special, SoapNet Reveals… ABC Soap Secrets, was broken up by a real (uncomfortable, endearing) moment between Kamar de los Reyes (Antonio) and Bree Williamson (Jessica/Tess). They were talking about something nobody in the audience would know about the other. De los Reyes is about to speak about Williamson when she says in mock-doom, “Oh I know what’s coming,” and then he points to her tendency to not shave her legs for their love scenes, but then show him she’s shaved them the day after. Williamson, in turn, says de los Reyes “is one of the most anal” clean freaks around, his dressing room is spotless (unlike hers). He defends himself as a cleaner by saying that if his surroundings are a mess, then he can’t concentrate on his work acting. “That’s why she never knows her lines!” he then blurted, to reference Williamson’s messier habits, like not shaving her legs for love scenes. At that point, the two gaped in shock at each other, de los Reyes trying to ease the embarrassment for his female co-star, who tried to take the joking in stride as he kissed her cheek (she’s not looking back at him though, er), saying that he was lucky “I’m a nice girl.”

Earlier and later, de los Reyes was more complimentary of Williamson as his long-time co-star. When asked, he said, smilingly, he felt “jealous and pissed off” about the new man in her soap life, Nash Brennan, since Jess was “his baby.” She said, “Aw, you’re gonna make me cry.” (I said, “Hand me the bucket.” Uh, sorry.) And he said he was okay about Jess’s Tess-like tendencies which will pop up after her integration, as long as she keeps dressing more like Tess, with the short red number Williamson had on for example.

On some personal notes, de los Reyes announced his engagement and the completion of a renovation project on his and his fiancee’s new apartment. While Williamson remarked on her character’s pregnancy (with little Bree) having no effect on her real life. The biological clock remains silent, “I don’t even hear a faint tick tock.”

A lot of the spoilers Williamson, de los Reyes and some of their castmates spilled for the fall semester are nothing new to the online soap fans trolling the boards. Adriana seeks revenge on Dorian for the stalking incident, “Cramer style.” The same thing that happened to Natalie with Cristian awhile back – when he was presumed killed – happens to her again when John is presumably killed in a car accident en route to her with a proposal. John’s death propels Natalie into the comforting arms of another, unexpected man.

But then, there were some true revelations. Rex uses his detective skills to help turn up Todd’s and Margaret’s baby. (This next spoiler, delivered by Trevor St. John/Todd received the loudest applause from the live audience, based in L.A.) Spencer is released, but then caught red-handed, and put on trial for the murder of Thomas McBain. “Todd and Blair move back in together,” previewed Kassie DePaiva (Blair). But, she added, Spencer could cause one of them to face their own mortality.

Cristian and Evangeline’s relationship is gonna be threatened by a jealous Todd. Todd gets wind of some information that could rescue Cris, and bring him closer again to Evangeline. However, Renee Elise Goldsberry (Evangeline) said, Todd won’t do it.

After Jessica’s integration sessions prove quite successful, she and Antonio will begin to plan their wedding. It’s not clear whether she pulls a Tess and leaves ‘Tonio at the altar though. But she will display more Tess-like behavior that gets her into some jams.

Trevor St. John (Todd) was one of the first co-stars to speak out and stick up for Dan Gauthier (Kevin) after the August 23rd firing announcement. And, here is his statement, which he made shortly on his official website, after asking fans to help out via Debbie O’Connor: “One Life to Live’s decision to fire Dan Gauthier is difficult to understand. Dan is a terrific actor, one of the best in daytime, and a dear, dear friend to everybody on the show. I’m sure he’ll find another place where his talent is appreciated. I’ll miss him at work everyday and I think the show will be poorer for his absence. I can only imagine the fans’ reaction to the loss of such a great asset to the show.”

More public support from other OLTL co-stars flooded in:

Kristen Alderson (Starr) posted on her message board vouching for Gauthier’s character as a friend and a fellow performer. “I feel, and I know that many others feel the same way that he is one of the best actors on One Life To Live. They are making a huge mistake if they don't change their mind. I hope that all the e-mails, letters, and calls will make them rethink their decision. I'm sure that all of my other co-stars including myself, will be very upset to see him go.”

Kamar de los Reyes (Antonio) urged his fan club members and other fans through a personal note to write in support of Gauthier. “Dan is a fine actor; his professionalism and humor are just a few things we look forward to as we come to work on the set every day.”

Hillary B. Smith (Nora) not only expressed sadness at Gauthier’s firing etc., but spilled the beans a beat earlier than Heather Tom (Kelly) did about her impending exit from the show…in trying to keep them both on. “Kevin is a Buchanan and a Lord and Kelly is a Buchanan and a Kramer. They are both exceptional actors and wonderful people. What could be next? I am writing!”

Michael Easton (John) joined the bandwagon with his “OUT OF THE LOOP” website entry. “Being off the show and out of New York for a few weeks, I was probably one of the last people to find out that Dan … had been released from the show. I know Dan's departure has upset many of you and I just wanted to remind you that it's never really over in the world of daytime. You have established precedent by saving actors before who have been let go but [whose] performances you determined were invaluable to the production. I encourage you at this time to let your voices be heard again. They do listen. Use the power.”

An actor who has been in Gauthier’s place and lived to tell the tale, Nathaniel Marston (Michael; ex-Al) spoke up, impassioned. “I am stunned by the news that the decision makers at ABC have decided to release Dan Gauthier from One Life To Live. I have enormous respect for Dan, not only as a brilliant actor, but as a good and decent human being. Nobody knows better than I do just how powerful the voices of the fans can be and I want to encourage all who feel strongly that Dan should stay to speak out. Let ‘the powers that be’ know you support Dan Gauthier, and while you're at it, let Dan know as well.”

At the last viewing of the Campaign For Kevin site, Paul Satterfield (Spencer) was to submit his words of support as well. Keep checking in for additions and updates. A rally is planned in front of OLTL studios in Manhattan, date to be set.

The biggest missed opportunity in OLTL’s recent history has to be not pairing Dan Gauthier’s Kevin with Melissa Gallo’s Adriana. I personally witnessed sparks the second Adriana sparred with Kevin over his inattention with regards to Duke, after Blair threw Kevin over for Todd. But did TIIC do anything about this more daring pairing? Of course not, and now we’re paying for it.

Adriana’s Gallo might’ve been extra thrilled had the pairing been greenlighted, because, you see, as a little girl growing up, she used to be a giant Brad fan from the 1989 cult hit movie, Teen Witch, and Gauthier played Brad back then. When she first learned of the connection early on from Gauthier, he never let her live her crush down. The same with her at age 13 and Mariah Carey’s music video for the hit song, “Honey,” which featured David Fumero, Gallo’s boyfriend. “Sometimes they used to cut the video short and I’d get all mad, like ‘No! Hot guy at the end of the video!’” –Soap Opera Weekly, September 5, 2006

TV Guide columnist Michael Logan once said Bree Williamson (Jessica) had to be one of the worst interviews he ever conducted. He characterized it as mostly one-sided, with the subject barely giving an inch, much less an inch of anything remotely quotable. I see nothing much has changed in Soap Opera Weekly’s September 5th “CHATTER BOX.” Her answers to fans’ questions were short, to the point, textbook party line, almost terse. When Bill Fitch attempted to broach into the critical, about the pervasively dark stories on OLTL, Williamson shut him down (IMO) with, “I’m an actor on the show, I’m not a writer on the show. I love my storyline, and that’s all that I can comment on. I think the writers are doing a great job. If [fans] would like to see the show changed in some way, then they should write in to the writers.” (Guess who probably won’t be speaking up against the establishment any time soon?)

Slightly less terse, more informative: She distinguishes the playing of Jessica from alter Tess in many ways, but one of them is … with Jessica she tries to cross her arms and hunch over, but with Tess, she carries herself with better posture.

Country and Broadway singers will switch places, and may do some duets for an October 30th benefit concert in Nashville, TN, and Renee Elise Goldsberry (Evangeline) will be among the star-studded performers. The second annual Broadway Meets Country benefit concert kicks off at 7:30 p.m. in the James K. Polk Theatre at the Tennessee Performing Arts Center. Cost is $35 to $500, on sale starting September 15. Monies raised from the sale of the tickets will help TPAC’s educational programs as well as the Actors' Fund of America. Other headliners include country music’s SHeDAISY, Lorrie Morgan, Lee Ann Womack, Raul Malo, Jamie O'Neal, and Broadway's Laura Bell Bundy (Hairspray), Dixie Carter (Thoroughly Modern Millie, Designing Women), Michael Cerveris (Sweeney Todd, Assassins), Brian D'Arcy James (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Sweet Smell of Success, Titanic) and Julia Murney (The Wild Party, Wicked).

Nathaniel Marston (Michael) left a recent message on the (212) 604-4000 One Life, Many Voices hotline.

Kassie DePaiva (Blair) made a pleasant revelation while working closer with Michael Easton (John). The guy has facets other than brooding and intense, he can be hilarious, artistic and smart. She knows from character to actor revelation personally, because many fans often mistake her for her bitch of a Blair. Her intro as the Blair recast years ago inspired many fans into a furious froth because the character messed with the Max and Luna love affair, and they’d take out their anger with the character on sweet little ole her.

After Trevor St. John (Todd) recently joined golf fanatics John-Paul Lavoisier (Rex) and Dan Gauthier (Kevin) for a nine-hole, the novice impressed his buddies with a score of 41. The guy never really played golf before, marveled Lavoisier, and he was playing with Gauthier’s old clubs. If St. John ever considered golf as a serious sport, (and the guy just got his own clubs), Lavoisier contended, he could do some serious damage on the greens as a professional.

Brittany Underwood has been asked by TPTB to stick around as Langston on contract.

Brandon Buddy was chosen to portray Starr’s next love interest, Cole, the offspring of a buddy of Todd and Blair’s. He’ll be on-screen October 10.

Marty’s coming back, but not under Susan Haskell, the original actress to portray her and win critical acclaim.

The man Natalie turns to after John “dies” from a car accident? None other than Michael.

The little baby boy Paige gave up for adoption behind Spencer’s back? None other than Rex. Duh.
