News for the week of 31-Dec-2007

by Carol Banks Weber

Melissa Gallo (Adriana) became Mrs. David Fumero (Cristian) on December 9th with Javier Morga (ex-Tico) as their presiding minister of ceremonies. The wedding was held in Clifton, N.J.’s Valley Regency, and enjoyed by several cast mates past and present, including John-Paul Lavoisier (Rex), Renee Elise Goldsberry (ex-Evangeline) and Mark Derwin (ex-Ben). Morga was able to perform the marriage ceremony because he was ordained via the Internet, reported Lavoisier.

Everything Farah Fath (Gigi; ex-Mimi, DOOL), 23, has been through since leaving DOOL has been, in her view, for the best. Even though, at the time, Fath did suffer anxiety about what she did in leaving without another gig in sight, trying out for OLTL’s Sarah two separate times (the first when Sarah was supposed to be a rock singer—and Fath doesn’t sing even though she tried out a Pink song), not starting her new role as Gigi for several more months. The break in between getting Gigi and starting as Gigi proved to be a godsend for Fath, enabling her to experience life as a normal post-teen. During the eight-month break, the May 1st-born Fath held an estate sale, sold her place on the West Coast, packed up and drove to her hometown in Kentucky with her roommate sister, chilled with family and friends, and experienced a first since hitting the ground running as a working actress. “… I did things I’ve never done before, things that college students do; I met a new group of friends and did little stupid things like playing beer pong or going tailgating at a football game.” Doing these everyday, normal things that other people her age do made her feel normal and inspired her as an actress for the soap role she was about to take on. “As down-to-earth as I think that I’ve stayed during all my time being a TV ‘star,’ it was so liberating to just do things where I was born that people do every day and just think are normal. I would take note of things I was experiencing and think, ‘I’m going to use this feeling for when I start my new job.’” Her new job took some getting used to. For one thing, there isn’t time on OLTL to dress-rehearse, she explained. Her first scenes with Erika Slezak (Viki) proved eye-opening and humbling; Slezak didn’t even have to crack open her script, but Fath frantically riffled through hers before the cameras rolled. As the new character, Fath also hoped fans will be kind and give her a chance, reasoning that in real life we meet new people all the time, new people liven up the premises otherwise. –Soap Opera Digest, January 1, 2008

John Brotherton (Jared) inadvertently fulfilled a psychic’s premonition about his fiancée Alison Raimondi—in the nick of time. Raimondi, an actress herself, relies on this psychic to help guide her. This psychic promised that Raimondi’s 28th year on earth would be profoundly romantic. Brotherton was aware of the psychic’s promise when he proposed to Raimondi a few days before her 29th birthday. In the days leading up to turning 29, Raimondi would tell Brotherton, with some chagrin, that she guessed her psychic guide Judy was wrong this time. And he’d chuckle to himself, knowing that psychic Judy was right, little did his girlfriend know at the time. The actual proposal took place in the house they were moving out of (so he could take a new soap job at OLTL clear across the country). Once the house was empty, Brotherton took Raimondi to the spot where they first kissed, and did the knee thing while she stood there shocked and speechless. A little too speechless for Brotherton’s liking, ‘cause she didn’t answer him right away. He asked again and she replied, “This is not happening right now.” –Soap Opera Digest, January 1, 2008

Barbara Garrick reprises her role as psycho Alison Perkins, as of January 25. Asa’s fifth wife Pamela (actress Christine Jones) will also come back for a time, January 18.

David Chisum might receive walking papers as Miles.

Starr and Langston will feud over Cole, precipitating the return of the old, bitchy spawn of Todd and Blair.

Check out Jeremy in Chicago’s storyline speculations for next year in his SoapTown USA/Craze column entitled, “Writers’ Strike Threatens Improvements.” Some of them are doozies, including the one about Natalie and Jared making love anyway, Natalie about to have an abortion (thinking this child would be a product of incest) and forcing Jared to come clean… Tina returns and so does David… Addie, Melinda and Dorian will delve back into their troubled childhoods for more revelations… Jessica turns into Tess for real, and a new alter comes out, the gatekeeper… River makes a return engagement, taking up with Sarah. A word of warning, though: If you’re a professional fan who’s only into soaps to single out, worship and stump publicly for one supercouple or character for the rest of your life despite what’s actually happening on the TV screen, don’t bother ever reading anything this talented columnist has to write. He’s not for you.
