Suggesting that Finn go to a meeting was a good suggestion, although saying "get yourself down to a meeting" probably could have been worded a little more gently/diplomatically than that, especially considering he just lost his father. Violet may not have been okay going to Elizabeth's home and being away from Finn so soon after losing her grandfather. Maybe if Elizabeth had offered to stay at Finn and Violet's home to help Finn get through the initial shock (with him eventually going to a meeting at a different time) and to let Violet remain in her home might have been an alternate solution. Maybe Elizabeth could have suggested Alexis coming over, too, although she was in court. I may have this approach all wrong. GH didn't show how Elizabeth knew what happened in the first place, unless I just missed that part.
